Advice For Affiliates: Don't do this ...

As I just received two e-mails from different marketers, both using the subject line "You've Been Selected (OPEN NOW)", I feel it a good time to remind new affiliates not to make this mistake. BTW, that mistake was made by some not-so-new marketers.

When you join in a launch promotion, and they give you pre-written e-mails, only lazy marketers simply copy and paste. Smart marketers use that pre-written e-mail for inspiration and they customize it to suit their list.

Especially in our niche, where most prospects are quite likely to be on a number of lists, being the lazy marketer who sends out an e-mail with the same subject line as a half dozen other lazy marketers is not going to get your message noticed - other than to be deleted as, "Oh hell, more of the same crap!"

    What a good point!

It is always a good idea to remember to beginners and not-so-beginners that being lazy is just a great way of wasting your time (and even your money).

      Solid.

I know we all hate the false subject lines.

Unique isn't hard; it's just that tons of folks are allergic to thinking.

I couldn't help but copy and paste.

Just seemed too right at the time.

LOL. My lawyers are already talking to your lawyers about the copyright infringement. We'll leave them to it.

The exact, #1 the reason why I recently unsubscribed from all but about 2 mailing lists.

To my mind, if you're in the "make money online" / "internet marketing" niche, and usually send out unique and valuable content, even doing this just for the occasional product launch is risky.

There's probably not a single subscriber on your list, in these niches, who isn't also on those of countless others' - many of whom are likely promoting some of the same products as you.

You're only as good as your last impression (or in this case, your last email).

If the last impression you give is one of a lazy, mere money-sucking marketer, that's what you become. People can be (and are) fickle, and if you just happen to be the one who's annoyed them with the same email for the 3rd time that day, some are likely to hit the unsubscribe button without so much as a second thought.

Is it worth it to you to save the few minutes it'd take to rewrite a promotional email - or at least include some other unique and valuable content along with it - at the risk of losing subscribers, or gradually (and sometimes abruptly) throwing your respect and reputation away?

That answer to this, I suspect, is quite often "yes". At the rate a lot of these well-established guys/gals replenish their lists with new subscribers, doing their best to retain those they already have isn't always a top priority, it seems.

I suppose it's the email marketing equivalent of "churn and burn" article marketing.

Seeing as that subject line is one that appears on a good chunk of my spam, I'd be more likely to hit the spam button on those. Whoever came up with the email copy or at least the subject line wasn't too terribly bright to start with, by the sounds.

And if you ad-swap, or sell solo ads, or otherwise allow some other marketer to decide what you send to your list...

They can do this to you.

Think about it. Some guy might buy a half-dozen mailings from big marketers in his niche... and send the same thing on all of them, making those marketers look bad, while sending out a customised email message about how he's sure plenty of other losers just send out the exact same message.

And suddenly people are more likely to buy from him, because he stands out in their inbox.

It's surprising how often I see this. It seems like it would be an obvious thing to avoid even for beginners. Then again, they probably are just really lazy.
