Twitter, Twitter, Twitter. WTH?????

Am I being dense or is it just too new. I read about Twitter all over this forum. I went to Google and conducted many searches asking what Twitter IS and how I can make some money with it, or at least generate traffic.

I can't find ANYTHING that makes sense to me.

Does anyone know of a free tutorial of some sort that can explain to me what Twitter is and how to use is?

Honestly, I haven't the slightest idea how to make money with it.

All I know is that I put up a badge on my blog and have been getting steady followers since then. I don't have much traffic, but it works great. People want to read when I put up a new post, have some cool news, or whatever else. Then I get return traffic to the site... so I guess for me, that's where the value is!

Twitter is a neat website but it's not going to be a 'job-killer' in terms of traffic and sales unless you sell products that are related to 'making money with Twitter'.

There are some ways to generate traffic with Twitter:

    1. Post links to your new products and blog posts. This in and of itself does get some traffic (the bigger and more responsive your 'Twitter list', the more traffic you get).

    2. You can also ask for help in getting others to syndicate your blog posts on Digg and other social bookmarking sites. This helps in generating more traffic and also for search engine rankings.

    3. Build a more responsive list. Invite subscribers on your autoresponder mailing list to subscribe to your 'Tweets' so that they can keep in touch with what you are doing. This is great for building up rapport and trust with your subscribers, with equals more sales.

    4. And of course, not to forget, that it is a great tool for building business relationships if you choose to. The direct messaging tool can be more effective than email, and it's more likely that someone will see a Twitter direct message than an email (which is more likely to be lost in the clutter).

I've made about $7000 this month that I can track to Twitter. (Give or take a few hundred)

Most of the info you'll find around here about Twitter is totally wrong in my opinion. It's basically another form of web2.0 spam and it makes marketers look very desperate and devalues them very badly.

Keep an eye out for my Twitter rant video tomorrow. I'll tell you how I use it, and why I think 90% of marketers are totally blowing it when it comes to using Twitter correctly.

        Wow!

It is good to see so many people taking initiative and giving us a good info on Twitter... Thanks a lot for sharing it.

Twitter is an excellent way to keep people up-to-date with what you are up to, and what you are doing between your emails and blog posts. Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

I think Dana is the Twitter expert. Her username is Dana_W. I started using twitter (actually I think Vegas Vince made me) and it got kind of addicting but I still don't know why I use it or what its for so I can't be of any help.

ps- I use it mainly to chat with ppl in 140 characters or less, talk, socialize. I don't really try to sell stuff but I did give a tweet for my wso there and gave a tweet for a squidoo lens once. I know some ppl use it ONLY to try to sell stuff but I did not want to be spammy and always trying to sell stuff. I don't pay attention to tweets of ppl only trying to sell anyway.

    Best advice-Just ask Dana.

I haven't seen much in they was of sales from Twitter, but I've been using to build my list. That's been very successful.

You're allowed to follow 2000 people total until you have more than 2000 people following you. The best way to get followers is to find another well know marketer's twitter profile, click on their followers and follow all of them, or 2000 of them because that's as many as you can follow.

Wait about a week and then unfollow those that didn't follow you back. You can set up an auto follow mechanism with Tools to Boost Your Productivity on Twitter TweetLater.com, this is really handy because when some follows you it will send them a message automatically. You can thank them with this message and include a link to your site. After about a week or two use Your Twitter Karma to mass unfollow those that haven't followed you back. You'll then have room to start following more to boost your followers past 2000.

You can call these followers, but what it really amounts to is another form of a link farm. It's rubbish.

These are NOT followers. Followers are people who truly want to read your stuff and are genuinely interested in YOU! Following this method usually attracts a bunch of other marketers who are interested in doing nothing more then boosting their followers count, and then hocking some crap to them.

Sure, you may have the numbers on your Twitter page, but the amount of "TRUE FANS" you really have is still dismal.

There's a much better way to use Twitter to your advantage. Much, much, better.

OK, fair enough my friend. So, explain to me and the masses how you acquire 2871 followers who are actually interesting in what you have to say. Because apparently the relationships and networks of marketing friends I've developed are not full of people interested in what I have to say...

I've really not done much other then "Be Myself".

Post silly things, post informative things, post profitable things, and stuff like that.

Kevin Riley's advice is spot on. Use Twitter primarily as a money making tool and it's most likely going to suck for most people. Sure, some will be able to game a few grand here and there out of Twitter, but ultimately, most users will reject people who have these intentions.

Instead, using it for communication and genuinely digging what someone else is up to is the way to go. But when someone is following 2590 other people, I highly doubt they really care about each individual or are willing to pay attention to them all. That is very impersonal to me.

Anyhow, I'm gonna do a video in the morning.

Twitter is the most easy way to get traffic for your website. It's very popular now.
And one thing more, another social network pownce is closing this month.
Pownce was considered as a killer of twitter.
But now it faild, it is closing.
So twitter will become more and more popular in near future.

I don't know that I agree with that, in all honesty, although I certainly respect your opinion and obviously your way of following works for you.

First of all - I follow thousands of people, but I regularly favorite ones that I actually know so I can check in on what they're saying and respond.

I have had great success picking internet marketers and following their followers. I get the majority of my business from Twitter these days.

I'm always looking for new ways to find targeted followers, mind you, but I'm happy with what I've accomplished so far.

And as for how most IMers use Twitter - I see a lot using it right - having conversations about themselves and their lives, injecting some humor, responding to people's Tweets, etc.

I don't recommend Tweeting affiliate links. Twitter isn't an instant way to make money. I'ts a way to build relationships and a reputation so people turn to you when they need services or products in your field.

I don't consider Twitter as a marketing medium, although it can work that way for you. In my business, Twitter is my networking platform -- and in the long run, that's much more effective.

I've started a number of JV deals via Twitter and brainstormed some great ideas with some Twitterers.

      ADDENDUM:

Not everything you do online should be looked at for immediate return. If you're building a true business, it's like chess and you look a few moves ahead. Use Twitter to set up those future money-making moves.

I love twitter, but I think the value is in the relationships you build rather than using it for marketing purposes. I've had several good joint ventures that arose directly from my twitter relationships, so it has been a good tool for my business, but I don't really consider it a marketing tool. Actually the thing I love the most about twitter... being able to ask a question (especially tech questions since I'm not a techie at all!), and getting 10 answers instantly! It's like having my own tech team right there at my fingertips - love it!

Do a search at Twitter for people who have the same interests as you do, then follow them. In turn, some of them will start following you, and then their followers will see your updates and some of them will follow you, too. As time goes on, you'll have more and more followers.

You should keep following other friends, once you followed a friend, he may receive an email notification, then he may click on your profile, and then may follow back to you. So the more friends you are following, then more friends may follow back to you.

I feel that a good policy is to start by asking what the service is actually for. And using it for that reason. Why? Because it is more fun that way, you are actually giving yourself value and not wasting your time doing weird spammy things which don't get you anywhere.

Wow Randy, I used to live in Garden Grove! Small world.

Lots of people here have given some great advice and I'm sure that Jason's video will be helpful.

However, here's what I found with Twitter...it is absolutely 100% impossible to read every last post from people on your list.

Most often people will seek you out to try and get more followers themselves - if you don't follow them back, you'll generally see that they've stopped following you.

It's really a funky kind of game really. Sure you get people who really ARE interested in your stuff (heh - and they will usually sign up to your email list) but then you get those followers who simply want to boost their own popularity.

I personally market very little on Twitter and instead use it as a platform for just giving really good information (and a few off-topic and nonsense posts) here and there.

I'm curious though how Jason is tracking the links via Twitter. I have a script that will capture an id from a link and then email the information to me as to what links got clicked on but have yet to find one that covers all links I post.

Open to ideas on that if anyone has them.

No, I'm more looking for a way to track all of the links that I post in Twitter to see which ones get the most clicks and such.

These wouldn't be just links heading to my site itself - although - :p I just had a lightbulb moment - ...

I could just run the links through a redirect on my own site couldn't I? I use GA too and this would handle that tracking information.

So, Dana - thanks for the brain jog this morning - heading to get more coffee now.

I've been on Twitter for about a month now. I can really feel the power of it if used right. I primarily joined it for business purpose but it's great for socialising as well. Actually socialising can have an extremely positive effect on your business as it makes you appear "REAL" instead just mindless link spitting drone.

I usually interact with others in conversation. If I can't jump in one I try starting one with an interesting question. Lately I've been really busy with my launch that I haven't had much time for Twitter and when I do go on it I just tell people what I'm up and do a bit of self promo. I do kinda feel guilty for doing this instead of interacting with them first but I'll make up for that later I guess.

    Anyway I love Twitter.

    Thanks
    Adam
