Had a company that is building a marketing campaign for someone else, email me and ask if I would be interested in selling a domain name/website. It is product specific domain name, it is about a year old and is ranked in the 70's in Google, and gets about 1,000 unique visitors a month. It is a wp blog with amazon and google adsense. Really nothing special.

He offered $200. Good offer or no?

If you don't have plans for it then sell it.

On the flip side, if it's a specific product name, I would backlink the **** out of it and get it ranking for it's term. First page wouldn't be a problem if the domain is an exact match with very little effort.

Well, you may have a moral dilemma here...when you say "product specific domain name" do you mean the actual name of the product (example: I Eat Lays Potato Chips dot Com)? If so you or whomever buys the domain from you may eventually face the prospect of receiving a cease and desist letter from the owners of the trademarked name. So do you sell it and let them suffer the loss once they build enough traffic to get noticed by the company's legal department, or do you build the traffic yourself and squeeze every nickel out of it until it shuts down?

Then again, maybe the site won't be shut down.

How much are you making a month through amazon and adsense for that specific domain?

I was offered 15,000 for a local domain that has probably made about 150,000 a year. So... sometimes it is better to keep it and put more work into it.

Product specific domains always run some risk of getting shut down. From my perspective, its a question of utilization. If you really need the 200$, then sell it. If not, then take the gamble, build the links, get it to the front page, and quickly sell it for a lot more.

I agree with Steve, if you're thinking of selling it now for $200 then why not wait a little bit longer, build backlinks in order to get in on G's first page and then sell it for 10x more?

Do you need the money now?

If yes, get rid of it, but I wouldn't take the first offer. You know that it's worth something to them. Tell them you know that it's worth at least $400, you meet in the middle at $300. There's an easy extra $100 for you.

If you're making more than $200 a year with it, why sell it if you don't need the money now? It should continue to make at least that and more if you put some more work into it.
