How do I handle moving my domain from one host to another?

Hi

Just need a little advice as I'm changing hosting providors for a domain that I have and when creating the new hosting account it asks me for a domain. So should I choose the domain I want to eventually transfer or choose another.

I want to use my main domain but this will still be hosted for a while with another hosting providor. I assumed i can't choose the domain I want to transfer eventually if it is already hosted with the current providor. I hope that;s not the case.

I will be creating a new blog site with the new hosting account I set up for the domain I'm talking about here and when it is ready I want to make the change over as painless as possible.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

Well, the only proper way is to ask at support desk of the provider you are leaving. Then ask provider you are moving to. Bingo.
Because different providers all have different panels, systems and algorithms.
When registering at new provider, ask them this very question.

Most hosting companies offer one free domain for a year, so dont miss that out if they are offering that.

As Mike said - you should ask for support and they will help you.

You can definitely create the same domain on your new hosting account, just be aware that only one hosted domain website can be active/live at any given time (whichever host your domain DNS is pointing to in the settings at your domain registrar).

So when the time comes for you to actually make the switchover to your new website at the new host, all you need to do is log into your domain registrar and switch the DNS to point to your new hosting company.

Some domain registrars also lock the domain, so you'll need to unlock it before switching to the new name servers (if that applies to your account of course).
