Skype VOIP alternative ?

Any recommendations for a Skype alternative in for making calls to phones ?

I was using Skype since the last 4-5 years, but just 2-3 days ago, my account was blocked, and the reason was that I used it for business use and not personal use...and they keep on advertising in their slogan...that millions use skype for "personal and business use"

That is weird, I used to rely on Skype for my business activities, too, and they've never blocked my account for doing so. And besides, how do they figure out?

Have a look at the following VoIP providers as an alternative:
Business VoIP Provider | PBX SIP Trunking | VoIP Services | NEXTIVA
Jive Communications :: Business Phones Systems
800 Numbers l Toll Free Numbers l Virtual PBX l Virtual Phone System - RingCentral
Business VoIP | Small Business VoIP

Googletalk is an alternative of skype. They are offering UNLIMITED FREE CALLS to any number in U.S and Canada. Their rates for other countries is very cheap too. You must try it. I am loving their service.

This is dependent on the country you live in, so it may not free for the OP.

Then it most certainly won't be free. I'm not even sure if you'd be able to sign up for Google Voice if you live there.

There's a few simple hacks that anyone from anywhere can use to set up a Google Voice account and use it to make free calls to the US and Canada... even if they are not in North America... it will work from any country.

Basically open a new google account using a USA based ISP using a service like hidemyass... set up a google voice number using a service like Sonetel then once it's setup go into your google account settings and set the country default to the USA and bingo... make all the free calls to the USA that you want!

As long as you've been able to register at Google Voice then you may use it for free calls to US and Canada using Gmail. People can call you too but you need another service like Gizmo for you to be able to receive calls.

For paid calls (to other countries) I use Onesuite.com and its cheaper than Skype rates for most countries I frequently called.

Ditto!!! My husband and I both have Magic Jack. I picked up a Logitech headset/mike and use that for all my calls. MJ doesn't care if it's personal or business. Just buy the little USB jack, plug it into your computer and you're all set! You don't even have to buy a physical phone either; just use your computer and their software that loads up when you install the jack.

Great to know the alternatives to Skype!
Call quality has been lousy lately, but maybe it's my connection.
Will give Googletalk a try & let my Asian/MiddleEast/Australian connections know about it for their US/Canada calls.

        NO DON'T

I have just deleted my post - this company is deceitful - nowhere on their website (including the small print at the bottom) mentions that there is a call connection charge of £0.05 per FREE call. I have looked very hard and can still not find it, but that is how much was deducted from my credit after I made one call and it popped up in the troubleshooting when I went to contact Customer Services.

You can use services like 18185 and 18866 without prepaying to get this type of service, you only have to register on their websites with a credit card so they bill you in arrears.

You will never ever get exact alternative of Skype, but you can get somewhat similar. Skype is the father of internet telephony.

For PC to PC: You can use Gtalk, yahoo messenger, windows messenger.
For both PC to PC and PC to Phone: You can use Evaphone, VoIP Buster, Axvoice, MagicJack, Nonoh, FriendCaller.

Not that it helps you now, but I believe when you create a Skype account, they ask what you're going to use it for: personal or business. If you originally made a personal account and decided to use it for business later, then that could have been the issue.

I have two accounts, one personal and one business, and I can run them both simultaneously.

As mentioned by others magic jack is a life saver, only $40 first year and includes the device and $20 the next year its really cool i have been using it for 3 years now and they have just come out with a new device that does not require to be pluged into your computer just into the wall and into the dsl cable.

plus you get to choose your area code which is pretty neat.

I have never heard of anyone been blocked or banned for using Skype for business. How on earth would they know what you use it for unless they listened to your calls? I think that would be very unfortunate if you already used Skype, had your number out there in your business, and had to change your number because they ban you. Makes me think twice about using Skype for myself.

When you opened the Skype ID, it asked you "will you use it for your personal purpose or, business purpose?" I think you selected the Personal use, but you are doing business, so the SKYPE authority blocked you. now you can create a new ID by choosing business use, if you want to move to another site, you can use google talk, nymgo & so on.
