How do I set up freebie ebook for subscribing

I have been searching the forum so sorry if this is posted elsewhere and I didn't find it. I want to give away an ebook to new subscribers. Is there a standard method for this? What I need to know first is where to put the file, and how to make it available. I have created it as a pdf. I understand I can send a link in my first autoresponder email. But, how do I store the ebook on my site, and how do I create a link for it, and where do I find the actual URL for it? The URLs for uploaded files (WP site uploads folders) are ridiculous long and don't seem to work. What I would like is to advertise the offer of the free book, then they fill in the form, and then Aweber sends the email with the link. Should it just be a page in my site with a link? An ebook cover graphic? An exe file? Seems simple but I just can't figure this out. And is it possible for me to create an ebook cover for free somewhere? Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you using Wordpress? If you are, on the page you want the download link on, there is an icon for "media". Then you just upload the file from your computer and that's it. If not wordpress... err I don't really know because that's all I use.

You need to upload the PDF file to your web host. You can do it manually using an FTP client like FileZilla, or do it from WP dashboard. Select Media --> Add New from the left menu to upload the PDF. When done, WP will show you the details of the file and at the bottom you can see the URL.

By default WP organize uploaded files in year and month folders so you get something like yourdomain[dot]com/uploads/2011/01/yourfile.pdf. You can change this setting in Settings --> Media and uncheck "Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders" at the bottom.

Usually I upload my files manually so my URL will be mydomain[dot]com/uploads/report/freereport.pdf.

Not an expert at what is the best way to do it but what I do is to set up a download page on my site where I thank them for subscribing and put the link to the PDF file there. In Aweber, I put the URL of this download page as the thank you page when I create a web form.
