Questions: "Ping'ing" and Promoting New Content

I keep hearing the term "ping" in regards to letting google know a new piece of content has been created. How does one "ping"?
When I 1st created my blog, I submitted a site map, rss feed to different rss feed directories and I social book marked my site from socialmarker.com.

1. Whenever I create new content, I social book mark it to numerous sites on social marker. Is there anything else I can do to say "promote" and article I submit to the directories?
2. Should I "ping" everytime I create a new piece of content to let google know to index it?

If you are using a WP blog and have a ping list in your settings tab, you should get pinged automatically.

The other things talked about on the other post are also good, but the pinging should take place automagically in wordpress.

I always submit the rss feeds of my new created content to different rss aggregators using senuke and bookmark the rss feeds. My content usually gets indexed within a few hours..
