Hi,

I have an online business, which I plan to promote by purchasing a one-time advertisement to 100,000 quite targetted subscribers (they are not all paying customers, the leads were generated in exchange for a free product, but they are all real people interested in my niche). I'm going to sell a monthly subscription product to them with the initial and monthly charge of $39.

My question is, what conversion ratio can I expect? I understand that it is highly individual, however, the reason why I am asking is that I have never done e-mail marketing before - I am not really looking for answers like "you should expect this and that conversion ratio", but what conversion do YOU get under similar circumstances?

Thank you very much!

It's hard to say not knowing your product, niche, etc.

I've been a part of several email blast campaigns and some of them bombed, and others were profitable. But that goes for any advertising method. You don't know until you test.

For this type of traffic I wouldn't sell a membership up front. Perhaps a 14-30 day free or $1 trial. Yes they're "targeted" but they don't know you from Adam. A free trial to test the waters would convert higher.

Also they might say it's going out to 100,000 targeted subscribers but only a fraction of that will open the email.

Nobody could possibly give you an estimate on conversion rates for your sales letter, especially without knowing anything about it.

If you are buying a solo ad blast, then I recommend building your own list from that and then marketing later to those that joined. Your solo ad should be for some valuable freebie that you offer in exchange for the opt-in.

Exactly! To maximize conversions, send them to a simple squeeze page with a very closely related free offer in exchange for signing up to your list. If you don't care about getting their name, conversions are typically even higher when all you ask for is their email address.

The key is offering something that is very closely related to whatever got those people on the list your offer is being sent to.

You should expect a 3.25% conversion rate.

    I'm kidding, of course.

However, probably the best place to look for this information would be from someone who has recently used the same service to promote a similar product as your own.

You may be able to find this information out by asking the publisher or looking at a recent publication.

Just keep in mind that there are so many different factors that will affect your actual experience that it's nearly impossible to know ahead of time what will happen.

My best advice would be to see if you could send a test mailing to a representative sample of the 100,000.

You'll want to use a sample size calculator for this...just Google it and you will find a ton of them online.

I can tell you that with a confidence interval of 3% and a confidence level of 95%, you'll need to send your offer to 1100 random prospects on that list of 100,000 leads to get a representative sample.

That will give you a much better answer than any of us could tease you with.

    All the best,

If you've never done this before, expect to be utterly devastated by the response. You need to first test your conversion system and ratios with a smaller list; it may need to be tweaked before scaling.

What kind of advertisement are you buying? Is somebody emailing their list for you? Is this a random list of people in your niche? Will these people be getting an email from you, from somebody else they know, or will it be a cold email completely?

If it's a cold email completely or from you (if your list doesn't already know you or who you are), then don't expect much.

If the email is from somebody they already know (i.e. - you're paying somebody with a list to contact said list on your behalf), then you can expect a lot better response.

However, I would NOT try to sell them right away. Develop something of value you can give them to opt-in to your own list. Then spend a little bit of time building a relationship with them, sending them quality info, pointing them to blog posts or articles, or whatever. You want to show them that you know what you're talking about, that you care about them and their success, and that they should trust you...and your product(s) later on down the road.

After you build up a little trust, hit them up for an offer for a lower-ticket item. Build a little more specific trust w/these people, then hit these people up with a stronger pitch for your continuity program. In the meantime, keep building trust and pitching the low-ticket item to all the rest.

The idea is to condition them to not only like, trust, and respect you, but to spend money with you. And continuity (even fixed-term continuity) is some of the toughest stuff you can sell.

Would be glad to help with your emails if you like - feel free to PM me. (I've had a good bit of success with email marketing.)

It depends on the QUALITY of the list.

If you didn't create the list yourself, and it is the type of "paid service" I think it is ... you'll be lucky to get even a couple of orders.

This questions gets asked a million times, there just simply isn't a definite answer.

True, but it isn't that hard to predict if you know the quality of the list(s) involved.

If it is a junk list, he might be able to get some opt-ins if he does what Zeus and Brian have suggested, but he is likely to be disappointed with the overall results.

Anyone with a quality, responsive opt-in list of 100,000 subscribers isn't going to offer to send your advert to their list for something like $50.

I have a feeling the OP is thinking along the lines of "if I get just a 1% conversion rate that is a 1,000 orders", and that is why these dodgy services survive, they know people who don't understand the game have this mindset.

If you haven't already, if this person/company routinely rents their list out, get as much info from them about their list as possible and maybe they can provide some stats on earlier campaigns?

I learned a lesson a month ago when I paid just a few bucks for an solo ad to a opt-in list of 5000k realtors. Turns out that while their list had 5000k emails, about half of those bounced and only 10% of that half opened and I got 3-4 opt ins to the free offer I promoted.

So...lesson learned and next time I know to ask lots of questions before attempting something like this again.

Not surprised Steve, that is why I hope the OP takes note of my post (and yours)

Genuine ad swaps, solo ads etc do have their place for sure when you find the right people, but with these types of "services" where they charge a pittance for a big blast it is always the same old story.

Thank you for your contribution. I will probably see if I can run a small test as mentioned in this thread.

If it was $50, I wouldn't even start this thread, they're asking $3500 for one e-mail

Like others said, It depends on a lot of factors. One factor that I would specifically like to mention here is email delivery. I am not sure what platform you are using to store these leads. If its Aweber or some other ESP then they are best at delivering mails. But if you are hosting it on your own servers then you need some professional help getting your mails delivered.
