Questions for article marketers

by KeithR

I'm just getting started with article marketing and have a couple of questions.

Article Length - I've noticed that Ezine Articles requires an article of at least 250 words. Yet I see tons of articles on EZ of 500+ words. I can't help but wonder why anyone would write an article of this length when it could be split up into two 250 word articles. Is there any reason to write longer articles?

How Many Articles - How many articles should I write for each product I am promoting. I seem to remember someone saying they write 150 for each product. I don't know if I could write 150 articles on the same subject. And is it possible to come up with 150 good keyword phrases for the article titles? I struggle just to come up with 5 or 10.

How Many Directories to Submit to - I was planning on submitting my articles to maybe 5-10 directories. Would it be better to submit to 50-100 directories? I would be interested in hearing how many directories experienced article
marketers submit to.

Thanks in advance.

It depends on your goals. Why are you doing article marketing? If it's simply to get backlinks to your site, write them short and pay less attention to the quality. If it's to drive direct traffic through links in the article, you need write a better quality article so you can sell the click. And then some people write them to be longer and of higher quality in order to get them syndicated on as many other sites as possible. That builds name and site recognition and authority status.

It's not a one-size-fits-all activity, in other words.

    I am with Zeus.

You can write articles for links only, and when you do size does not matter.

If you write to attract an audience and customers, then you need to focus more on your storyline, and use as many words as are necessary to tell the story you want to tell.

The better your story -- by focusing on what your reader wants, the more likely you will be able to drive direct sales from your articles.

If you don't give a **** about Click-Through traffic (CTRs) or the reader, then do the bare minimum to get published.

      Hey Keith,
Both Zeus and Bill are right on. I'd rather have a handful of well written articles working for me than 100 poorly written ones that people have obviously struggled with to get to the 250 words minimum. Backlinks are one thing, but people will click through if you have separated yourself from the others with quality writing and a compelling call to action in your sig. My articles tend to run a bit longer, but if I've said what I need to say at 350 words I leave it at that.
      Just my 2 cents.
      Thanks!

    How many articles per product?

Right now, I write 16 articles for each keyword I find worthy of writing about. Why 16? Because I can easily come up with that exact number (8 one day, 8 the next day).

So the number of articles per product would depend on the number of keywords, I would use per product.

Contrary to what some others here have posted, I believe size does matter. The whole purpose of your article marketing should not be to simply get links back to your site - there are thousands of other ways to do that.

If you are going to the trouble of writing articles or having articles written for you, you may as well also take advantage of any traffic those articles can bring you.

For traffic you will need quality articles. Someone landing on your article is not a guarantee of them coming to your website. Your article has to do the job of taking them over to your website - only well written articles will do this. You can't get much across in only 250 words.

In regards to how many articles you should be writing, I think 150 per product is a little overkill. I also think 16 for each keyword (as the above poster mentioned) is overkill. The reason I say this is that once again, we are looking for quality articles. It would be very hard to write 16 articles on the same keyword phrase without compromising the quality of each article. And when you compromise the quality of your articles then yes, you will need to write more articles to get the same results that one well though-out and well written article could have given you.

IMO there should be no set number. When you are targeting a particular niche or product, do some keyword research and find the keywords you wish to target. Then write one, well written, quality article for each keyword phrase you are trying to target.

You should then go and submit that article to the top 5 or so directory sites. Sites like ezine articles, go articles, article base, etc. I personally would not bother submitting them to every article directory you can find. You are providing quality articles (hopefully) so you should put them on sites where the quality of work is equal to yours.

    Hope that helps.

I write at least 400 words in each article, and I must confess that I don't find it hard at all to write that many articles around each keyword, and hopefully it's without compromising the quality of the articles.

At least, my proofreader says they are good ;-) And they all get accepted by Ezine Articles.

Why would you find it hard?

Additional question: If you used a specific system to help you, would you find it hard, too, do you think?

I can only speak for myself, of course, but I find this way of writing articles both the fastest and easiest way so far.

        Britt,

It's just my opinion. If I had one keyword phrase I would find it very hard to write 16 articles without going over the same stuff or repeating myself. I would much rather write one well thought out article per keyword phrase.

If I had the time to write 16 articles I would think my time would be much better spent writing 16 articles targeting 16 different keyword phrases than writing 16 articles all targeting the one keyword phrase.

And looking at your signature "How To Write 8 Articles In 2 Hours Or Less" I would have to question the quality of the articles. I don't see how you can expect to write 8 articles in 2 hours and say they are all well thought out and quality articles.

Just by that line alone I can tell you are missing the point of article marketing. Quantity is NOT the key here, quality is. And I would never be trying to tell other article marketers they should be trying to write 8 articles in 2 hours.

So you're judging the quality of my articles, and if I understand you correctly, you haven't read them, right?

You're free to do so, obviously. However, if you would like to see for yourself, you can easily look me up at Ezine Articles.

Oh, by the way, Jason Fladlien spends seven minutes per article. Would you call him a poor quality writer as well?

I've written around 30 articles solely for EZA now, I'm thinking of submitting them to the other top directories too. Will I have to spin these? To stop the 'duplicate content', or are they fine as they are?

            Thanks,

            Britt,

I am not judging the quality of your articles I have not read and I don't want to read them (no offense - just not the point of my ramble here). But I am questioning the quality of articles that are written so quickly, yes.

I think any other article marketer here would agree that writing 8 articles in 2 hours does not a quality article make.

Go to ezine articles and have a look at the expert authors page. You will see guys and girls there who have posted upwards of 20,000 articles. When you then have a look at the number of views those articles have received, with the help of a little math 101, you can see that the top author there has on average, 110 views per article.

If we then slide down and take a look at an author such as Tim Gorman (a fellow warrior) who has just over 1,500 articles posted, with some quick maths you can see he is getting an average of 3622 views per article. The author above him is getting 155 views/article, the person below him is getting an average of 89 views/article.

I know for a fact that Tim preaches quality over quantity. The results speak for themselves, wouldn't you say?

In your opinion, then, if you write 80 words per minute and know your stuff, and use a system, and therefore don't have to spend so much time on your articles, you question their quality. (Without having read them.)

So the longer it takes to write an article, the better the quality?

In other words, if I finally finish my novel (I'm still on page 60 after a couple of years), it will be of a much higher quality than any of Stephen King's novels?

Yay! I'm going to be a best-selling, famous novelist

So in the course you are plugging in your signature, you are teaching people how to write 80 words per minute and to know their stuff so they can pump out 8 articles every 2 hours?

The time it takes to write an article does not determine it's quality, you are right. But teaching people to write 8 articles in 2 hours is the totally wrong mindset to have as an article marketer - that's what I am saying.

With a product like that you are clearly putting the emphasis on writing articles quickly which is not something I would ever preach to a beginner article marketer.

Whilst I agree that there are a few EXCEPTIONAL writers out there who could write a 500 word article at the speed being suggested, I don't think most people could.
I too am writing a book and have been told I'm somewhere above idiot. I would find it difficult at best to write a well thought out article that takes the reader through feel, felt found or pain, pleasure, hope depending on the article need and the type of landing page you're sending them to.

However I do 100% agree with saturating your Keyword. 16 articles, no, not for me. I do 5 articles, 1 squidoo lens, 1 doc stoc, 1-2 videos and 1-2 mp3's per keyword once that keywords traffic starts converting that is. I send all traffic to a landing page to precondition the traffic and then to the sales page.

I absolutely believe in quality. I have some hack articles I wrote that get average 211 views and as just one example one that's 3 months old today (that's why I chose it to speak about) has over 21K views and this morning a 44.6% CTR.

If I find a profitable keyword that I can rank for I OWN the top 5 spots on Google many times top 6-8 spots. You click on anything you are mine.

Then you write a hypnotic landing page with the long lost art of persuasive copy. Not this hack crap all the hype launch pages push. No, not that. I'm talking copy that's silky smooth where your prospect brings to the forefront of their mind the dreams they dare not speak and the fears the will not even whisper. Once you have them at their true core emotions it becomes their idea to buy your product and you now have a deep emotional investment from them.

That all starts with research, deep research. So that you are your prospect, you feel their emotional content. Your heart beats faster when you feel their pain and fears, you're engulfed in joy when you feel the rapture of the achievement of their dreams. You are your prospect.

When your sales and landing pages are written like that and your articles precondition them to this journey by the time they even get to your sales page they are just looking to confirm that they are in the right spot and find the buy button.

So, if your looking for links you can go buy 10k profile links for $5 or 3K really good blog links for $5.

But if you're a writer who obtains traffic from your writing then you are not writing for you, and you're not writing for the SERP'S (yes they have to be optimized, I'm not a dip wad) you're writing for the readers experience!

That's my 3 cent's (with inflation) and I'm sticking to it.

I am sure that some niches are such that writing a lot (either in one article or indeed lots of different articles!) is actually tricky.

One of the things talked about above is quality. That is surely not only about "the story", ie. set out to say something and say it, then stop, but also about the way you put a sentence together. The advent of cheap and quick "article writing services" from all parts of the globe, and (worse still!) the ability to automatically spin articles, translate them into Afgan, to South Korean and then back to "English" means that a woefully large percentage of the articles even on the directories, either make no sense, have weird sentences, use rare words not in common parlance, or are just plain gobbledygook. If English is not your mother tongue, English article-writing may not be for you.

I read one the other day about traffic (internet traffic) which talked about the reptiles. It was a long time later when I realised they were referring to the Google crawlers. Now, reptiles is an English word, in common parlance, but I have to say it should not turn up in an English article about internet traffic!

Never, ever, ever do this. Google Translate or Babelfish etc. are absolutely shockingly bad at translating to Korean and back. Some of my (Korean) students occasionally try and pull this in my writing classes and the results are eye-wateringly bad. As in unreadable and unintelligible.

Here's an example. I translated the last two sentences in the previous paragraph to Korean and back using Google:

Some of our (Korea) in writing classes, students often try and pull this mess and the results are eye-wateringly. The number is read in an affair.

Because most of the other article directories set their minimum length at 400 or above. And the SEs love more content than less. If it comes between your 250 word article for the same keyword at the 500 word article and they are optimized the same, who do you think they will rank first?

So - we're not submitting to only EzineArticles. You want to be able to reuse as much of your content as possible and I'd rather do that with 500 words because there are more words to spin.

I don't agree. The search engines like QUALITY content. If there is an article that is 250 words and one that is 500 words long, both optimized the same, the one with the most links pointing at it would win - because Google then assumes that article is more relevant and authoritative than the other.

You can write an article in 250 words and you can get some points across. But you can't go into as much detail as you can in a 500 word article. And this is what people who have problems are looking for - detail.

    Yes, there is.

One of the striking features here, in our many discussions about articles' length, is the consistent way in which all the people I know to be highly experienced, very successful professional article marketers state that they're writing articles far longer than those of "other article marketers".

My articles are typically between 900 and 1,200 words, and long experience in 8 different niches has taught me that I'll typically earn far more from a 900-word article than I will from three 300-word ones, in spite of the latter arrangement of the same 900-word total having three times as many resource-boxes and backlinks.

The reason for this is actually a very simple one: syndication.

The purpose and function of an article directory (and actually the reason for their being called "directories") is that they're depositories of content to which webmasters and ezine/newsletter compilers can (and do) go in search of content for their sites.

If I write an article about, let's say, deep-dea-fishing, what I want to happen with it is for the article (and its accompanying resource-box and backlinks) to be published on some good quality deep-sea-fishing sites, in front of pre-targeted audiences of people already interested in deep-sea-fishing, who go there regularly to read the site and its updates.

But I can't - because I have only one, small, new-ish site on deep-sea-fishing, myself, and its home page is only PR-0/PR-1 (let's say).

And, unfortunately, all I can get out of an article directory for my article is a non-context-relevant PR-0 backlink of almost no value at all (unless I happen to find a specialist deep-sea-fishing article directory, I suppose - but I don't happen to know any!).

So what I do with it is: I publish it on my own site first and get it indexed there, and then I submit it to Ezine Articles. A month later, it's been syndicated to 5 other, good, context-relevant sites because EZA is where the webmasters of those 5 sites look for content for their sites - because that's what EZA's there for and why it exists.

They have space to fill, so they use an article directory to source freely available content which they can publish.

And if they have space to fill, they're not very interested in 250-word articles, because they'd need rather a lot of them to fill their space. But if they see a well-written 900/1,000-word article that tells them something new and controversial, and especially if it makes them laugh a bit as well, and isn't overtly promoting a specific product, they'll republish it for sure.

And that's how I get the higher-PR, higher-quality, context-relevant, pre-targeted traffic and backlinks (which are worth thousands of times as much link-juice as an article directory backlink) that my article marketing business needs, in order to produce gradually increasing residual income from work already done.

I'm certainly not writing for article directory backlinks (they're almost useless to me), and I'm not really even writing primarily for article directory traffic (though I do also get some of that). I'm writing for syndication. And short articles just don't work for that purpose.

I'm pleased if I can write one article per day.

Quality (together with length) leads to quantity, through syndication, which leads to a big income.

It'll get you more backlinks, but that's about all it'll get you, realistically, and collectively they're terribly poor quality backlinks. You'll need tens of thousands of them (at least) to get your site moving significantly up the SERP's for any competitive keywords. You can do that, by writing 150 short articles and submitting them all to 200 places, if you really want to. It's not my idea of fun.

I submit to three directories, at the moment.

When I first started, I used to submit to 200+ (briefly, until I realised why it was such a waste of time). Then for a longer time I submitted to about 7 or 8. And a few months ago I realised that even that was unnecessary.

I only really need one (Ezine Articles) but I'm nervous of becoming dependent on one directory, because I'll feel like an idiot if they disappear tomorrow, so I normally submit to two others as well (but I don't really get anything much from them, to be honest).

All the most experienced article marketers I know submit to very few.

Building a real business (growing residual income, not fast traffic and constant "rinsing and repeating"!) through article marketing necessitates thinking well beyond article directories.

People who fail at article marketing all fail in more or less the same way: it's a way characterised by short articles, "writing for clicks", salesy resource-boxes, fast traffic, mass submission, obsession about their "CTR", poor quality backlinks, spinning (sometimes), high quantity, and constant "rinse-and-repeat". This business model does work for some people, though (just not very many as a proportion of those who try it - the rest silently disappear or come back a year later and start a thread here under the title "Article marketing doesn't work any more"!).

People who succeed and build growing businesses based on increasing residual income tend to have their own slightly different ways, though. In my case, I'm actually using an article directory as a way of getting beyond article directories.

And that's why I write such long articles (and forum posts, apparently!).

I've just really soaked in how powerful your explanation was, Alexa. All along I've really been thinking about getting back links as a primary strategy. Your focus is actually on attracting *website owners* to pull your articles and have their readers read them. Not just so your articles can exist on Ezine.com.

Really, that transforms my whole idea of effective article marketing. I really hate "cranking out" massive amounts of content. I like the approach you take and how that can be a better way to work with your articles.

As a newbie to all this could one of you please elabroate about article writing and duplicate content. I recently wrote an article posted it to my site then posted it to an article directory and it was rejected as duplicate content. My conclusion was if I wanted it on the directory I could not use it myself. The article was original content.

      Did you change pen names?
Or if you put it on your site 1st and did not have your name at the bottom then they see the exact same article on a site but of course don't know the site is yours.

Next time submit to the directory 1st, once approved then post to your site.
OR if you really need to post to your site 1st then put your SAME pen name for your article account at the bottom of your article on your site too!

You should have no problems with either scenario.

Agreed, there's nothing quite like getting 5k visitors from one article when it gets picked up.

And, if you're in a specific niche for any time and write really good nearly copy level articles then and have been picked up a few times, the Eziner's and webmasters will look for your stuff by name.

But you aren't getting that from any 250 word link bait, that's for sure!

IMHO I got news for anyone listening (well actually reading) quality beats quantity every time. Just think back about your relationships. Who do you remember the hundreds or THE ONE?

Keith, I recommend reading Ezine Article's blog, and look for the link that says "videos". They've got some really good tutorials on the very things you're asking.

Also in your Author's dashboard under Author's Tools, there's a Title Suggestion Tool. This is really handy because it used to be only available to Platinum members.

Ezine has a whole staff that writes nothing but titles. They pulled a lot of data over the past 10 years they've been in business on the types of topics that drew a lot of traffic over the years.

You're more than welcome to submit to other directories if you wish, but if you look on the search engines for certain keywords, you'll notice that Ezine Articles crops up quite a bit.

Yes, it can be a little boring to wait on your articles to get approved until you reach Basic Plus or Platinum status, but keep submitting articles. Over time, you'll see the traffic come in. Use the Title Suggestion Tool to give you some good ideas.

If you've got $397, you might want to sign up for the Ezine Articles Formula course. This is where EZA gets into the details of article marketing success. I've never tried it, but it's something new they came up with.

Or you can always check out their article writing shop and buy their cheaper ebooks, but a lot of their free tips are pretty good by themselves.

Read Ezine's blog. Check out their videos. Even the little 90-second audio tutorials in the author resources and "learn how" icons always have some tidbit of helpful information.

If you are going to go to the short side, remember that the article directories always have a minimum word count. For most, it is 300 words.

    Hello to all,

    by this;

"If we then slide down and take a look at an author such as Tim Gorman (a fellow warrior) who has just over 1,500 articles posted, with some quick maths you can see he is getting an average of 3622 views per article. The author above him is getting 155 views/article, the person below him is getting an average of 89 views/article."

    Also get this example to my web projekt to make money with adsense;

when I get 155 views for each article. But how many from theese 155 visitors come to my webpage? 10% more, less?

So when i need 5000 visitors every month.

Also i think its possible, when i write daily 40 articles to 40 different directories, tha 1 article brings 8 visitors a day for 10 days then is finish, then the article a little bit slips further back , each day. Then after 10 days 1 article brings not visitors.

So, daily 40 articles brings me 300 visitors a day? I hope it the this is real.

Plus daily 10 different blogposts with long tail keywords, to 10 different web 2.0 properties
(link wheel) must be brigng traffic too.

Then later plus the traffic from the serps.....

Summary this i think is possible to become an flood if googd traffic and when you make your adsense template right to become an high ctr, then you will make money.

    best wishes

Threads asking how to do Article Marketing come up quite often here - so I have a standard reply - I hope this helps:

Two brilliant threads to read about article marketing are these:

Read them both - all the way through - and take notes.

For further information I recommend the following directory - It is education in article marketing - a guide book and monthly newsletters - with a directory thrown in! You can read what Warriors think about it here:

Write your articles exactly long enough to tell the story and have your readers take action, then stop. I have articles which are complete at 400 words and others which have exceeded 1500 words.

Write exactly enough articles for your niche to tell the entire story over your series of researched and targeted phrases, weighted upon your desires for backlinks, and direct traffic from the directories. Add in the factor of your ROI. This number can be anywhere from a handful to hundreds. No one can answer for your niche, since we do not know your competition level and goals.

Submit your articles to exactly as many directories as it takes to accomplish #2. Personally I rarely use more than EzineArticles, Articlesbase, and GoArticles. The only exception is when I'm trying to drive up backlinks for one of my blogs, then I will throw an extra article out to a large number of directories not expecting any traffic from these lower tier directories.

I endeavor to have articles syndicated, too. I "hope" for syndication from the directories, and "work" for it by contacting content users.

I have 100's of articles X 3 niches on EZA and find that my most successful articles (in terms of SEO) are in and around the 400-800 word range, then again I don't have many (less than 5%) under 400 words.

In terms of clickthroughs, I have articles at 400 words that get far more click throughs than articles at 800 words, so value to your market doesn't always mean length (in fact often it does not).

More critical is the title (and how well it targets a huge desire with your audience), how interesting you make the article, including at least one nugget and I like to back that up with a case study or example.

Finally - perhaps MOST critical to getting traffic back to your page is having relevant anchor text and a compelling call to action back to your page.

Interestingly - there are ways you can link to relevant content back on your webpage with anchor text within the article body in EZA (as long as it is highly relevant and below the fold - they have automated checks for this and manually check these links as well so they will be picky, but I have had many accepted this way) and a resource link as well.

If you're using EZA, whatever model of "article marketing" you're using, there are particular reasons for wanting 400-words (rather than 350, for example) to be your minimum length.

The main reason is that 400-words is what EZA's editors are instructed to consider as the cut-off between a "proper article" and "advertising fluff". They even admit this, relatively openly, on their blog - you don't have to do much "reading between the lines" to see what they're saying.

If you write 400+ words, you're allowed more anchor-text in your backlinks (five words each instead of three words each).

If you write 400+ words, they're a lot less likely to decline an article on the grounds that a site linked-to in the resource box is "inadequately informative for our readers".

      And so on.

A lot is being missed by not writing quality articles. My articles usually range from 600-900 words and are submitted to EZA as well as targeted niche ezine publishers. Many of these publishers will frequently ask for additional articles on topic and even post my articles on their websites. This makes for not only quick sales but the added combination of backlinks and syndication.

    Thanks in advance.
Here is something else to consider in terms of article length. If a person struggles with writing then cranking out a 250 word article might be their maximum performance level at this point in time. Gradually as they become better at writing they can migrate to longer articles.

If it comes down to not writing anything or writing and submitting 250 word articles then by all means write and submit 250 word articles but my experience has shown that articles that short simply don't produce the results that a 500 word article can produce.

You've probably read Alexa's post where she talks about her articles going anywhere from 900 to 1200 words in length.

However, notice how she writes and the style she uses......quite honestly she is an accomplished writer and many article marketers are not so longer articles work better for her business based on the strength of her writing abilities.

As an article marketer you must leverage your strengths and improve your weaknesses if you intend to compete against your competitors.

As far as number of articles to submit on behalf of a niche. Over the last year I have come to the conclusion that 40 published articles is the magic number where I can ascertain if a niche will be profitable enough to continue writing content on it's behalf.

That's based on 40 keyword phrases with 1 high quality article per phrase. There are other factors involved such as website conversion..etc but rigth now I focus on the 40 articles as a standard article marekting campaign.

For submission purposes....if you plan to knock out 250 word articles then by all means submit them to as many places as you can but automate the process.

On the other hand, if you plan to create much longer articles then be a bit more selective in terms of where you submit your articles. Save your best work for the foloowing places:

    1 - Your own site
2 - Top tier article directories
3 - Guest writer opportunities on blogs

In fact why not conduct a double edged sword campaign where you submit longer articles to one group (see above) and shorter articles to a second group...this way you obtain benefits from both article versions (short and long).

One caveat to all this - 1 high quality article will always outperform 10 low quality articles and size does make a difference in the amount of quality you put into your article content.

    respectfully,
    Tim

Article Length - I like to hit around the 400 range to have enough content to make it a valuable article but short enough where I can make it time effective for me. I suppose this can depend on what you're talking about but enough to get some good quality information on your topic in there but don't make it 1000 words just for the sake of it being long and having it be drawn out and purposeless.

How Many - I think as many as you can for the topic. What I do is find articles topics that can potentially rank on their own in the top of Google just based on the juice they get from Ezine or Article Base. I try to hit like 5000 or less searches with 5,000 or less competition. Then I will try to write as many possible articles I can within these constraints for the topic that I'm marketing for. This usually becomes tough because those are pretty tight constraints, but you can get creative with this. Mind you this works for me and I don't know your situation completely but you might find this helpful

Directories - I've found that I don't really get any benefit from spending all the time submitting to article directories that are worthless. I submit to Ezine, GoArticles, and ArticleBase. I used to submit to 20 or so more with an automatic article submitter but I really saw almost no results from this and quit doing it. it's nice to think you can spread your content over 100's of sites but in reality it doesn't seem to do much at all except waste time and clutter up the internet. That is my experience though maybe it has helped others but I saw no traffic coming from these directories and very few if any backlinks
