depends what you want to promote.

It can be waste of time also. Both, Squidoo and Hubpages have some really weird rules and they shut down pages because THEY think it's a spam. But it's not...

HubPages or Squidoo lenses are just 2 of many social freebies you can use to generate backlinks, one warrior said he mainly used hub pages to accelerate his adsense payout rate they have a 60/40 click split on adsense and amazon ads. Your links are doFollow with a decent profile rating of 75+.

Their page building tools and easy adsense/amazon registration help makes it an easy place for a beginner to get their feet wet.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you are sorta not seeing the whole picture, if you just consider it in terms of backlinking. One of the main benefits to these authority sites is, they are on high PR domains and the sites can get ranked more easily than your lesser PR or fresh site.

You can get a lot of visitors and take additional spots on the SERPs if you build up your backlinking to these properties, and write compelling information with a call to action back to your site.

This is especially true with longer tail keywords with less competition, and still quite a bit of search volume. You can easily get 25,50 or 100+ extra visitors a day through these "feeder" sites, if you write compelling information and a strong call to action

Hubpages and squidoo lenses really works. Both are having a great significance in SEO and i always recommend them. Although, you have to be careful that hubpages doesnt accept any duplicate content or the content quality below average but in squidoo lenses, you can add videos and links and can experiment alot.

I don't use Squidoo. But I do use HubPages.

In fact, I use HubPages strictly to promote products on Amazon. Many of my hubs are ranked #1 for the most obscure, silly looking phrases that I was really just experimenting with.

One of those experiments generated $700 in Amazon affiliate sales by the third month, so I took the formula and applied it to other hubs. Needless to say, it works.

I don't do any backlinking on those hubs. It's really just a matter of knowing how to pick your keywords. That's actually the hardest part.

Sometimes it's not the most obvious keywords that work. You really have to think the buying process through. And I try to focus on secondary customers, instead of thinking of people who primarily buy the product.

Once you find that psychological sweet spot, you're in the money.

If you are going for a high competition niche then it will be tough to generate traffic and also money.. If you are on to a less competition then you can generate a good amount of money..

For high competition you will have to put some effort to get it indexed high in search engine..

I would say that even after being misused by certain section of Internet Marketers, both these websites (Squidoo in particular) have still not lost their authority. Google still ranks them as I have seen on several low to mid competitive keywords. But given a choice, I would rather use Ezine Articles

I have used hubpages on and off and have gotten good traffic from them. Never made a dime in Adsense sharing, but I mainly use them to direct traffic to my own website or blogs with linking inside the article. I guess they can be used for backlinks too.
