Humor in Sales Pitches or Emails

There seems to be a lot of people on the Warrior Forum that never crack a joke and get a little pissy when others do. That led me to wondering how many of you use humor in your sales? Do you make fun of yourself or others in your emails? Do you throw the occasional crack at your subscribers?

For those of you that know me, then you know that I am as straight laced as they come. I never attempt humor and keep everything very businesslike. To demonstrate my serious, all business attitude, I have pasted a picture of three ladies balancing wooden spoons on their noses.

Never, ever use humor in sales pitches or emails. There will always be some who are offended and don't get it.

I do. And if people don't like, well...forget them. I don't want those "too serious" types on my email list anyway.

It's amazing how serious and business-like some warriors are, and I've seen some take offense at even the slightest hint of a joke or prank...lol. Humor is one of the best medicines around, so personally I love getting in on the fun when it occurs here.

I absolutely agree with what your saying, if you can't have a little fun with what your doing, what's the point?

I also have noticed a lot of people take themselves very seriously all over.

Could you please stop making posts like this. This is a serious forum for serious marketers trying to build their businesses. We don't appreciate you wasting our time with this nonsense.

If you don't stop, I'll send my flying monkey to pay you a visit. He'll take your lunch money and wreck your little red wagon, mister.

I use humor in my ebooks, reports, articles, autoresponders and forum posts.

I believe that it helps people better connect to me through the copy.

I am not too sure if I have ever used humor in my sales copy though.

    That reminds me...

Did you hear the one about the monkey at the bar?

      Hi Tsnyder,

Yes, this would be an examplary attitude.

What could to cause a problem, is how people will receive that humour, according to experience.

People aren't alike. Someone always have good mood, and the other is always sad.

You need to find out what their mood is when they read your sales page.

This does not always possible, I'm afraid.

      Cheers,

      Sandor

My dad told me that all of my life. Now that he is gone, my brother has taken up the mantel.

But when people write me to complain that they blew their drink all over their monitor, through their nose, I think those two were and are just humorless.

Generally, you should avoid humor in sales copy.

      Why?

Because it's hard to pull off. There are too many people who think they're funny... but aren't.

However, if you're going to swim in the shark-infested waters of humorous copywriting, remember this...

The humor shouldn't be the focus of the copy. After all, it's a sales pitch -- not a stand-up routine. The purpose of humor -- if it's used at all -- is to help hold your reader's interest.

That said, for some products, it can be worth split-testing.

I told my CSR's to crack jokes with Americans when ever they can. No real reason, I just wanted to see what would happen. It usually goes something like this:

"Hello, I'm checking on my order of 200 GPS Units"

"Oh, sorry, we had to sell them on to the street to support our employees drug addictions"

        ..."whaaaa?"

"Just kidding, they have been shipped out, here is your tracking number, you should be able to pick them up at your local airport in 2 days"

        "oh, haha"

But... I've got a couple "thats not funny" in which the CSR's tell them to lighten up.

    Hey,

I think if your humor is part of who you are then definitely add it in your copy. Its okay to be bizarre, weird and funny in copy. If it is authentic and real and you have a good relationship with your readers they will appreciate you exposing the real you. It build rapport and makes you more real not just a robot. I am not saying make your sales letter a big joke you still have to be sharp as a tack, enthusiastic and viewed as an expert but be human.

If your copy is robotic and is always perfect your not going to keep the attention of people these days. Give them a reason to read and a reason to keep them reading.

I think one of the biggest lessons i have learned from Gary Halbert (brilliant, weird and amazing copy writer). Write how you would talk....

You will accomplish more from movement then you will from meditation. Get off you butt and write get stuff done it's not always going to be perfect.

    Just my opinion...

    Luis.

I think it depends on when you use humor. I was on the phone to my bank and the nice highly trained CSR made a joking aside about an answer I had given to a question he asked me. I was actually funny but it stopped me in my tracks because it was unexpected and out of place. I was talking to my bank not having a drink in Yuk-yuks.

      My personal guidelines:
If the communications is about developing a relationship to make you more human, likable, and trustworthy, then joke away. Jokes that don't put anyone down are great in some of your emails to your list(s). They break down the barriers between you and your potential customers.
If the communication is a business transaction, then stay all business.

I find humor to work well. It helps create more of a bond and a sense of sincerity. When you or the one you're buying from is too serious it doesn't really seem like they're a real person.

My favorite IMers are those I feel I can easily hang out with enjoy talking to.

I attempt to do the same.

The way I see it is that it's best to have real solid relationships with some people than to try and impress everyone but not really connecting with anyone.

I've read that if you can make someone smile or laugh, you reset their attention span. The trick is getting the smile or laugh, while maintaining your position of friend and adviser.

Two pretty safe targets are you, yourself and any common nemesis. For example, when I'm talking to someone about how to give directions in a product or report, I warn them about assuming knowledge that doesn't exist. The example I use is a time I was looking for a fishing spot and kept getting lost. Finally, I asked directions. The guy looked at the directions and laughed. "Here's your problem. That red barn isn't there anymore. Tornado took it about three years ago. Now what you want to do is go down this road to where the grain elevator was before it burned down..."

I've come to the conclusion after working in membership sales at a gym that humor can be a powerful tool, but it must be as "universal" as possible. I've found the most effective form to be "positive" "uplifting" humor. This is something I had really never thought about until now. Great topic!

I was just thinking about this yesterday.

I've got some parked domains that have just been sitting around for years. I figured that I might as well put WordPress on them and add a few pages of Amazon Affiliate reviews, to see if they can at least earn enough to pay for themselves. For the reviews, I was thinking of doing them similar to how Woot writes up their products.

Humor with your customers is a delicate matter. It depends on your field. I’m not an internet marketer; I lead with grave mental illnesses, psychological problems, etc. Humor has no place in my sales letters or email messages.

However, I have written many articles about humor therapy. Humor is very helpful for many reasons.

Internet marketing gives you more possibilities. If I was an internet marketer I would use humor in my email messages, but never in my sales letters. When a prospect is judging your products and thinking if he/she should buy them or not, this is not the right moment for jokes.

In your sales letters you have to build trust and confidence. You have to prove that you are a serious business owner and you respect your customers, eliminating all fears.

Humor is fine in your email messages because it’s a way to approach your subscribers and build a relationship with them. It can be very effective, depending on the circumstances.

In general, if you don't like who I am, you're probably not going to like my products all that much. Because an awful lot of them comes from who I am, and that's only going to increase over time.

So if it bothers you that I swear like a sailor, rut like a dog, and drink like a fish... maybe you shouldn't be on my list in the first place. But if you're like the guy who emailed his list and said "This man emptied a bottle of rum fast enough to make Jack Sparrow do a double-take last night" - well, we should probably talk about a possible JV.

For those of you that know me, then you know that I am as straight laced as they come. I never attempt humor and keep everything very businesslike. To demonstrate my serious, all business attitude, I have pasted a picture of three ladies balancing wooden spoons on their noses.

I use humor when writing in Swedish but not in English. It is extremely difficult to know how jokes are perceived especially when your audience isn´t the same as you spend your spare time.

But I can promise you that I am a really funny guy. Yes I am.

My first reaction on seeing that picture was, "I've seen 'Aliens,' and those spoons look disturbingly like facehuggers!"

The thought was not conducive to a humorous mood.

Yes, all Hooters girls are Scottish. It is a prerequisite to work for the company.

    There are marketers out there
    who strive for "delirious"
    They need to buckle down
and be a bit more serious

They should be subscribing to gurus
All the regulars, and some others
    Not watching Laurel & Hardy
    or quoting the Marx Brothers

    Internet marketing is stressful,
it's not all wine and roses
We can't all sit around posting
pics of spoons on some noses

    Those less serious marketers
    they make just a fraction
    Because CPA doesn't stand for
    Chuckle Per Action

They should be telling their list
    about their marketing beliefs
    Not cracking jokes
    about boxers and briefs

    Techniques to discuss
    include Google ad placement
Not who does or does not
    live in their mom's basement

    Yes, settle down people,
this is a fact not a rumor
    Internet marketing is tough,
it's no place for your humor

So if you wanna stack up your money
    as high as the rafter
    Be 100% serious
    and ditch all that laughter

I use humor. I'll make fun of myself, but not others. I'll use absurdity as often as any other kind of humor. It's unexpected. Most like it, a few don't get it. I make those people stand in the corner.

Yes mate I think it absolutely scandalous that some people can't take this business seriously. This isn't funny business. If they want to muck around they should be doing something else for a living. I, for one, will unsubscribe from anyone sending me rubbish like this video below.

I think there are more and more marketers with a sense of humor, and use it daily-

    'Earn $28475.46 in a day'
    '10 clicks to $10 grand'

and the constant bombardment of hillarity, what a funny business we're in!

I do agree, as I have already stated in this thread.

Eric Louviere made a similar post which I personally found pretty funny.
Unfortunately it ended up in the basement and only got a few views.
A couple of responders even said "good advice", whether they were being funny I can only guess.

You know, that picture of Einstein on your blog has always struck me as a "picture being worth a thousand words", incarnate.

Say's more about genius and humor, than all the sayings put together.

Humor is a fine line...it could either pull your prospect closer to knowing/liking/trusting you or push them away.

I teach my email and autoresponder copywriting students to use humor sparingly, and only if they know it's going to work. How to know exactly? Instead of trying to be funny, choose a scenario that's already been PROVEN to be funny--like a current Youtube sensation, a classic TV or movie bit, or something going on in the news right now that's making the nation giggle.

For example, the video of the woman texting and walking into the fountain? Copywriting GOLD. There's so many different ways you could use that in an email or autoresponder to catch someone's attention, make them smile, and further cement the relationship between marketer and prospect.

Don't work so hard to create your own material (which may or may not work). Just catch a ride on what's already making people laugh.

I think this is awesome! Everyone's opinions were awesome as well.. great stuff. Here's mine:

Yes, humor is something I believe should be in sales pitches. If people "don't get it," or are "offended," the truth really is... that's their challenge. If they can look past whatever disagreements the automatic processes of their neurology create and get in between stimulus and response to focus on the important things (the product, how beneficial it's going to be, results and so on), than I think they'll be more in the position to make a practical decision.

I think humor should be involved in everything. Not only does it allow a fun environment, but speaking in terms of the effects on the human body, it's a "healthy way to sell."

    Nice thread! Great replies.

An Internet marketer walks into a bar..
    Sits down, orders a scotch.

Suddenly the door opens, and in walk a priest, a rabbi, a nun and four ducks.

"What is this," he asks . "Some kind of joke?"

I try to be as professional as I can but I've found a little light humor can help in certain situations. If you're too formal people can't identify with you.

For instance, when someone contacts me about writing articles for them they usually ask for a sample. Sometimes I send them a sample article about how important it is to ask for sample articles. It has a 2% density of the keyword "sample article" lol
