Knowledge is Power; But Information Sucks!

Enticing title, I'm sure; however, let me clarify. We, especially as NEW online "warriors," are constantly doing battle with so-called gurus who specialize in the SELLING of informational products. The problem is, these sales devices come up much too often.

I'm sure you can agree, almost every single day, somebody is announcing an info product that boasts of producing IMMEDIATE sales income, even without any experience at all. Although knowledge indeed comprises power, informational products online normally generate an unusually HIGH rate of return.

This is because they basically appeal the emotions of affiliates who have been experiencing a rather difficult time in getting traffic and sales. Thus, the temptation of nearly ANY assistance that costs less than around $40, may seem quite reasonable.

If only these intellectual "beauties" were built with some care and decency, then actually they would become much more rational for both the seller AND the buyer. Unfortunately, however, this is not the case currently.

Affiliates may be much more well forewarned to gravitate towards the sale of actual PHYSICAL products because engineers, manufacturers, and product research firms invest much more into assuring that worldwide consumers will receive something that has "tangible" value. Things that you have "in-hand" can more easily be tested and proven.

And, once such products pass such a personalized test, then a consumer becomes a proud customer who tells others to buy it, as well.

Knowledge is power, but this is much less true today online when it comes to the sale of informational make-money-fast products. Let's hear what you think about it!

    I only agree in part.

Consumers gravitate to physical products. There is no doubt about that. And when they go for digital products, those are mostly in the entertainment vertical.

Marketers and anyone else committed to learning buy digital information products. School is in session, and we are here to learn.

A college education is not tangible, but people buy them.

Information products are not tangible either, but people still buy them too.

And fortunately, there are a number of disciplines where the information product is still welcome and seldom questioned.

Here in the IM-world, we are caught in a tank full of piranha, willing to eat one another at the first sign of weakness.

In disciplines outside of IM, people buy an education for the future. But in the MMO-world, many consumers want NOW instead of TOMORROW.

MMO-shoppers are looking for shortcuts to make a million dollars by next week, because they need to pay a $400 repair bill on their car.

While everyone on the planet continues to believe that you must get an education and work toward success, in our little piranha pond, the masses do not plan for tomorrow.

Great analysis, I completely agree with you.

Sometimes I see an interesting topic title and click on it, but then I see a lot of words and decide that I am in much too lazy of a mood to read all of this. I'm sure this is a great thread, but it's Friday.

Too true. as "marketers", we should strive to write good copy in forum posts too.

No ill will meant, just saying that the title was great, but the copy made me scroll.

    Your title is wrong.

    Knowledge is not power.

    It should read ...

    Rare knowledge is power.
