Can We Buy "FaceBook Friends"? How Much Are FaceBook Friends Worth?

Learn Empathy -- put yourself in the shoes of others.

Who do you Follow/Friend and why?

I follow my family to keep in touch.

I follow my real friends for the same reason.

If I Follow/Friend other marketers, I do so because I care about what they are doing.

Yet, the reality is that many marketers Follow/Friend others in hopes that they will Follow/Friend back. The "mutual friending" approach seems all the rage in the IM community.

If I follow you, will you follow me back?

And if I did follow you, and you did not return the favor, am I going to act like a jilted lover and leave you promptly?

LOL

Let's get down to the brass tacks...

If you decide to Follow/Friend someone, because they are willing to do it back, do you pay attention to what they say?

Do you care what they are doing?

Do you care who they are?

Do you follow their links?

Do you read their ads?

Do you actually view them as real friends?

Do you think they are any different than your are?

If you don't care about about them, why would you expect that they care about you?

If you don't read their ads, do you honestly think they are going to read yours?

LOL

Ah yes... I know what you are thinking...

You are thinking that they are probably a better person that you are... You think they will, even when you won't...

And they are thinking the same thing about you...

ROFLMFAO

Let me ask you a curious question...

If you knew that those schmucks that Follow/Friend you treat you exactly as you treat them... Would you continue to Follow/Friend others in hopes of getting your ads read and your stuff purchased?

So what if you have 30,000 Followers/Friends... You are Following/Friending 30,000 people whom you pay no mind...

Talk about a serious case of mental masturbation!!

You have 30,000 people Following/Friending you who don't give a **** about you!!

And you think that makes YOU special?

I find it fascinating and disturbing that so many people enjoy the Follow/Friend mutual masturbation game.

People don't seem to realize that the other person is only going to play until they get their ego stroked...

And people call that a marketing model... It astounds me...

I thought marketing was a process that helped consumers find our offers, leading to the opportunity of making more sales...

I guess I have been doing this marketing thing all wrong for all these years...

If I promised that I don't give a **** about you, would you be my friend too?

I also find it fascinating/disturbing that people are willing to "buy friends" who don't give a **** about them...

If I wanted to "buy friends" that don't give a **** about me, I'd just go to my ex-wife's house and pay her to go out to dinner with me.

Both will be as equally fulfilling... But I stand a better chance of scoring than you do, b/c my ex used to sleep with me...

You are just GUESSING on that...

But then again, if she don't give a **** about me, why would she rock my world the same night?

        Bill,
Especially when mental masturbation is so much more satisfying.

I'd never thought about it like that but I can see how you would

But what if I stumped up just enough cash to overcome that?

This is a very different thread for you Bill and I suspect you've been looking at some of AFI's more interesting non Amazon sites before writing this.

Anyway, I follow people here because I like and admire them and I learn from them...That includes you Bill, even when I know what you're up to whilst your kids and wife are out of the house for 5 minutes.

My Mum always said that'd make you blind.

You think about that next time you get your eye's checked.

I mainly connect with other marketers who are my "friends" via Skype or email. I follow people back who follow me because it's common courtesy... like a social networking reach around.

But I don't know how many people actually "care" about their followers. Many just use Twitter or Facebook as easy syndication for their content.

With regards to people "buying" friends or followers, there's a good reason for it...

Many people will not follow you if you don't already have an existing base of followers or friends. It's tough to gain traction on these social networks without an existing base of people following you. It's all about adding a little social proof... looking popular.

Whether it's right or wrong, numbers matter. They matter everywhere especially if you are trying to brand yourself. You use the number of followers (even if they aren't paying attention) to attract more people into your business. People that WILL follow you and "care" about what you're saying.

As much as no one likes to talk about it, even right here on WF, number of posts and "thanks" matters. Numbers add to perceived "authority"...

I know you're thinking of a phrase that starts with 'circle' Bill.

        It's all just perception.
