What type of prize would motivate you in an affiliate sales competition? A motorcycle, car, computer?

Just the good feeling that I get when I help a fellow marketer reach their goals. And the glow that comes with providing great products to the public.

    And CASH

      Hi George,

I agree with what you say. As I experienced, money is a motivating factor for many people. But this is only true up to certain levels.

There is a level where the good feeling is more important than money. In order to motivate someone properly, you have to know him thoroughly. Because, if you try to motivate someone on the basis of your assumption, you may have the opposite effect.

Anyway, you cannot motivate the best ones with money. The money is good for their appraisal only. The best ones are motivated by the delight. (I learned this when I was a manager in the insurance business.)

      Have a nice day,

      Sandor

I think computers and vacations would work well. In a recent high-ticket affiliate contest, I believe the top prize was a luxury vacation to Italy complete with all the amenities and a VIP guided tour of the Ferrari factory there.

Computers and gadgets are typically easier to disburse as prizes, whereas with cars and motorcycles it may get a little tricky to send the prizes over; in this particular affiliate contest, I noticed that some of the top promoters in the top 10 live all over the globe - India, Indonesia and Canada, among other countries. I can only imagine the logistics nightmare involved in shipping a vehicle thousands of miles across the world to another country.

Acknowledgment is a powerful motivator. People love to be valued and appreciated. Obviously one way to show appreciation is with material goods and money. However reaching out to people and making them feel important goes a long way.

      Hi Merlyn,

I am glad of your approach. Peple are 'designed' so that everyone loves the recognition from those who have the power to recognize our efforts. And the need to acknowledge the good works of affiliates or employees never goes away.

What is more, recognition doesn’t have to be costly and it can go a long way to establishing a culture that is supportive, innovative, and productive -- among your affiliates. Acknowledgement is the strongest (and cheapest) motivation tool you have. Unfortunately, for many marketers, the hardest part about acknowledging others is remembering to do so.

Besides of material acknowledgement, you also need to apply spiritual tools. Here are a few, basis tips:

      * give your affiliates every tool that necessary to achieve their goals (and your expectations)

      * stay in touch daily and be available when they need you

      * email them and specifically refer something they did – even if it was an expected part of their activity

      * convey your faith in their ability to meet the expectations you have established

      * take an opportunity to ask two easy questions on a regular basis:

      a - What do you think about…?

      b - What do you need to…?

      One more thing, please.

Motivating your affiliates starts with motivating yourself. Why? Because enthusiasm is contageous. If they see that you're enthusiastic about your business, then it's much easier for them to be so. If you make a great job, you'll be the model before them.

It follows from this that you need to understand what motivates you. Without this you can't be successful in motivating others.

EDIT: these would be my expectations if I'd be affiliate for someone. Shaun's remark is sympathetic to me.

      Many successes,

      Sandor

A car and laptop computer will do me fine. If I change my mind I can always sell the car for cash...I will then use this cash wisely to continue to build my business for years to come.

Wisely spent will only create more possibilities for me.

    None.

If I make a recommendation for an affiliate product, it's
because I believe that it will truly benefit my subscribers.

The affiliate commission is a side-benefit and any additional
prizes don't motivate me one iota to push harder.

    Dedicated to mutual success,
