Please help: A work from home mom needs ideas

Hey Everyone,

I was at skating practice yesterday evening. Somehow the word spread that I'm an internet marketer. The mother of a young skater walked up to me and asked for some "work from home" ideas. She had a full-time job at the post office before quitting to spending more time with her young son. She now has about 3 hours to spare everyday on something to work.

Somehow, I get the feeling that money isn't her motivation. She seems pretty wealthy. I guess it's boredom or the chance to be productive in a work environment or to build a dream or something.

Do you have any ideas that can help her?

I could have suggested things like affiliate marketing, blogging, selling info products, providing freelance services, etc...

But I just thought of checking with anyone with more experience in understanding the psychology of "work from home moms".

Thanks so much in advance.

Well, what you said that you could have suggested is pretty much where they would need to start. How do they want to make money? Then they need to find that market...something they are interested in and within that market find out what people want.

So that's what I would tell her. I'm sure she will want you to expand on your answers, so be ready to explain it all to her lol!

Sometimes, it's not about not knowing what she wants, it's about getting around in doing it. I guess you can draw the answers from her by asking her questions. She should be the one to come up with the answers on what she wants to do and you are suppose to guide her to her destination.

Don't be responsible for her decisions

I say start her off with Blogging and show her how to watch her stats and monetize that so it gives a little excitement. If she's already wealthy then she's not going to want to jump in head first and market.. Get her feet wet and see where she swims?
Point her in the direction of your favorite motivator, someone who really inspires you..
Stevepavlina.com is a good read, and he offers a good mix of internet life and 'real' life so for a newbie it would help for an easy transition..

Is she looking for an online business, a home based business or just the opportunity to do some online jobs/services?

The reason I ask is because they each can have a different set of core skills that need to be utilized.

An online business can be setting up a blog or website and then promiting it to build a list, make affiliate sales or generate adsense income.

A home based business can be as a Scentsy consultant or Send Out Cards consultant both of which offer great opportunities to generate a good income as a work at home mom.

A service based business could be writing articles for clients or a variety of other jobs.

If you know where she wants to focus her efforts you can then recommend something to her.

    Respectfully,
    Tim

I often get asked by friends (and even family) how they can start a home internet business. I'd say first of all, they need to enjoy writing and know how to write. Because for a newbie, the way to get started is to set up a blog. The common perception is that our business simply involves setting up a website, choosing something to sell, and then the money starts rolling in. What it really involves is a huge amount of writing -- whether you're posting comments on forums, writing articles, or updating your blog. When you explain this to people, 95% of them will instantly lose interest in the whole "get rich on the internet" idea...

    Thanks everyone!

All your ideas and suggestions were REALLY useful! I'm meeting her 2 hours from now. Hopefully help her figure out what road she wants to take by the end of today.

As of now, I know very little about what she intends to achieve. My briefing yesterday lasted 5 minutes tops. Lol. We have about 3 hours today. That should be a good start.

Keep watching this string. I'll update the good news for you as soon as I'm back home.

    Wish us luck

I don't know much about WAHMs but...

Get her on the Warrior Forum!

Show her some of the methods being used e.g. Article Writing, Sniper Sites, Offline SEO etc. Then she can decide which method appeals to her most, based on her skills, budget etc.

Does she like working per job, e.g. "Warrior For Hire" or more entrepreneurial e.g. setting up a site to sell a product?

  • It's reason's like this why I never share with people what I do or how much I make. Because once you do, then you get the proverbial 10101 people asking you to hold their hand and make money for them. They end up doing nothing, but want you to basically put $100 dollar bills on a silver plater and hand it to them. It's quite frustrating. And the #1 reason why I avoid telling people at all costs. I usually just say I work in advertising or marketing and leave it at that.

That said there are lots of ways: The easiest and most immediate
    1. Have them sell writing services either on here or other paid sites where they get paid per article. There are a couple sites that will pay between $4-9 per article and have a pretty fair amount of volume.

Kevin, this has been my experience as well. They typically say they want help in setting up an online business and want to be "spoon fed", and this is just code for "do all the work for me and get me started earning money".

They don't seem to realize that you're still setting up a business online, and as with any business work is required, and value needs to exchange hands before they get paid a single dime! For some reason or another, many still seem to think that the internet is a giant ATM that spits out cash with very little work...lol.

Are writing articles for money up her alley? She might be the type to write for sites like Info Barrel, Associated Content and Bukisa if she's not looking for high upfront payments. She can write on just about anything she wants to and just enjoy the trickle of money that flows in.

If she truly is bored, she might want something to occupy her time, but not something that actually takes a lot of dedication, like an entire website.

    Just my thoughts.

From your suggested list, affiliate marketing is the best option. It is the best online business model to do it in the available short time frame and you need not worry about shipping and customer care. Moreover you can easily auto-pilot your business. All these positive features qualify the affiliate marketing as the best option for those moms who have the desire to start their home business.

    Hi Swarup,

I know that you already met with the woman so my response may be too late, but if you chat with her again you may want to suggest that she visit the WAHM forums. Of course suggest she visit Warrior Forum too, but as a WAHM herself she may find that the WAHM forum is helpful for her. This is particularly true if she decides to get into a direct sales business. She'll be able to learn about all of the companies and be able to ask questions from other mothers who can relate to trying to juggle work and family.

The way I understand it, stay-at-home moms seldom have time for themselves, at least until their children start school. They cherish that time, but it's often too short to do much of anything. An activity that does not require long sessions would be good.

A neighbor of mine creates jewelry from home and sells it online. Perhaps if she had some favorite pastime or hobby, she could turn it into a money-maker while still enjoying her free time.

There are tons of things a home mom can do.

Maybe she'd be happy starting a blog to give other moms tips on parenting, or games or other activities they can enjoy with their children. Such a blog might even become some sort of a "Mom's Breakfast Club" online where other moms can share their ideas, problems, solutions, and projects with each other. I believe there is such a site already like this. Here's one I just spotted: www.momsclub.org It might give her some ideas. This one's for sale - moms.com

She could even add a forum where members could chat, like we do here.

They could plan get-togethers if they live near each other. Boy, there's just soooo much they could do.

Expanding on this idea, if she had a site where she sold handmade items, she could also monetize it additionally by
      1. writing tips for making jewelry (or whatever item it is)
      2. guides for buying the materials needed, and using affiliate links if available
      3. creating patterns for jewelry (or other craft)
      4. starting a mailing list and sending offers every so often
      5. writing a guide for starting your own jewelry business
      6. have a newsletter for jewelry making, and possibly sell ads space in the newsletter.

      Just a few ideas.

Having a biz where items are made by hand is a time-consuming business. There's also a limit as to how many pieces you can make in a week/month/etc.

Adding additional income streams (that are automated) is a benefit.

For a person like her, she requires people interaction, community, support and a system you can plug into. Like you said, money may not be a motivator just a way to keep score, she is looking for fulfillment. I recommend a network marketing business that she finds inspiring and fun or starting a community of like people like her around a subject she has passion for, build a list, have gatherings and monetize.

I would say getting her to spend an hour or so a day on the warrior forum would give some priceless and fast education. Then find out what interests her.
Help her set up a blog as thats the thing that needs the least amount of external support and there's tons of free tutorials out there. Let her find her way and be available for support in case she gets stuck on something. before long she will know what she wants to do.

    regards

Sometimes work at home moms are looking for more legitimate "jobs" from home, instead of a way to build their own business. You might refer her to some of the live help and call support jobs online. If she has any skills like writing, she might be interested in something like Elance or Odesk.

If she is instead looking for an internet marketing plan that will build more long term residual income, there are some excellent programs out there for complete beginners.

I worked in a popular, legitimate home-based business for over 20 years and I can tell you from experience that most of these people will just suck up your time - then never do anything with the information you gave them.

After wasting my time on a lot of these people, I started telling them they could sign up for my seminar on the subject. Nobody ever did.

If it's not worth it to them to pay money or time, they're not going to follow through.

    swillon:

The first thing I would do is get an inventory of the person you are talking to. It's great that you're discussing strategies with the person (like blogging), but it's kinda worthless unless you know more about the person in general....so you can get an idea of what niche they might be suited for.

My reasoning is simple: Numero uno rule of success is 'enthusiasm'. The more enthusiastic you are about what you're doing, the more likely you are to succeed. If you get a chance, grab a copy of 'How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success in Selling' by Frank Betcher, and read the first chapter, to see how and why this works.

What I'm looking for in an inventory:

    1. Hobbies and Interests
    2. Special skills
    3. Some personal cause or crusade they might be fired up about

These are things you can use to get them into a niche where they have a decent shot at success.

Once you get a niche for them, then you can work with them on strategies to monetize what it is they are doing.

    Hpe this helps.

      Hi Swarup,

If you really want to give your friend the answer that will thrill her, you have to make it in such way that she will partake in the discussion with you while the answer comes up.

Ask her how often she does certain things such as writing etc.

This will enable you to know if she can really freelance.

By the time you pick 3 or 4 questions for her and see her answer them, it will be easier for you to point her in the right direction to channel her energy without hassles.

There are tons of websites out there that have ideas for women who want to work at home, including job opportunities or things they can do to get started. In my opinion though, if they lack the motivation, then they really won't make money by working out home. A lot of the projects you can do at home take time and they are not instant paychecks, so you're more likely to give up on the project, especially if she has little ones to look after. I would use the ideas posted here and if she can stick to them, then she can move on to something more elaborate. Good luck.

    Swarp ..

CPA marketing has been working great for me so far .. my first month I earned over $500 in commissions but, it's also a "roller coaster" ride .. With my being out of work for 4 months now, and the company I was contracting for burning me for my wages just before Christmas, every little bit has helped!

CPA seems relatively "easy" and something a stay at home Mom can do between dressing, feeding, chasing the kids all day LOL
