Email List Building Service - open source or commercial?

BIG lists are part of our business plan 2011/12

I'd like to find a solution where the costs don't scale -
that component makes me shy away from the likes of aweber...

So I've been thinking we should use either
1. open source with commercial smtp server

Or

2. standard commercial offering (like aweber)?

Would appreciate any suggestions - who to use etc- thanks all.

    Your mindset is wrong in the way you're looking at the
    'costs' of list building.

    Rather than thinking about the costs of the service (or
    software), focus instead on the increased profits you
    get as your list grows.

    I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't manage costs
    but don't be penny wise and pound foolish.

    Being cheap in business is expensive.
