Ultimately, you are supposed to build a list...

I'm thinking of moving away from Amazon and moving into the IM niche.

And I have an inbox full of Clickbank get rich fast promos, from supposedly reputable, well known people.

Maybe a modicum of marketers send something of value.

Most just promote others products, in an obnoxious way at times(deceptive email titles).

So if I build a list, I'm supposed to send out all those clickbank offers to the uneducated masses?

you don't have to promote rubbish to your list. The lists I respect the most are the ones that offer genuine recommendations and/or reviews of products they really believe in. Sell quality products... you'll enjoy your work more.

That is what I thought, but when you see top names pushing every new product it makes you wonder. The sales emails seem terse and canned too, but they must be converting well.

          You be different.
Create or find a good product and then promote it. Be sure that you NEVER promote something that you have not bought and looked at yourself. Your reputation is on the line.
Your list will depend on you offering value.
Outsourcing or creating your own product is a great way to create a business. You know what the product is about and will also learn a lot in the process that will help you make your business even better as you build it. You do not have to be like other people. Bieng an affiliate is a great business to be in, but it takes more time to make money. You can make money quicker by creating your own product and selling it.

          Good Luck !

Please don't just push any and every product to your list.

I have been on lists where they send 5-8 emails daily, each one promoting a different CB product, each one with a zillion exit pop ups that won't let you leave the site. WTF?! (Personally, I think those endless pop ups are like viruses) I unsubscribe fast from these lists.

The lists I choose to stay on provide quality info, be it a tip or a free tutorial. And once in a while, they will recommend a product, which I'm willing to take a look at just because I trust that person.

They may be top names now but where will they be in a few months time when people have unsubscribed and they are no longer trusted?

Help others, give them what they need, become trusted. Make this your priority and then you will grow your own business.

Also, you don't need to stick to the IM niche. There are many profitable markets out there where you can build your list.

I think more people are catching on to the fact that people are promoting things no matter the quality, and it's starting to bite them in the butt. I think people that start to provide more quality content, quality reviews, and push quality products will be the only ones who don't see their lists dwindle.

Well there are some good suggestions here. I have some of my own products(software) that I'm thinking of giving away as linkbait to help with finding keywords and looking at competition.

I don't think I have it in me to sell products that I don't feel would add value in one way or another. Its not even the fact that they could get a refund or not, just giving people false hope bothers me.

Do all lists have to be IM related? It seems like IM related lists are the only one's you can JV with, but surely there must be a market of people who wouldn't buy products through their own affiliate links. Why not go after one of those?

We call it "Churn & Burn" when you send anything and everything to your list just to make a buck. Unless you have a system in place to replace all the unsubs you'll get, fuggedaboutit.

And, as other have mentioned, it's poor marketing in the long run. You'll get a reputation as someone who doesn't care if what he recommends is trash or not. Who wants to be on that kind of list?

Nowhere does "treat others like you want to be treated yourself" hold more true than in list marketing. The "Churn & Burners" don't care. They have ways to add more to their lists than they lose, and their entire goal is to burn through constantly and make bucks off of you without caring in the least what the repercussions are. Do they make a lot of money, in some cases? Absolutely! Is the cost to their reputation and standing in the IM community considerable? Absolutely!

    List marketing definitely works, IF:

    1. You promote decent products.

    2. You offer quality content on a regular basis, MORE OFTEN THAN YOU PROMOTE STUFF THAT'S FOR SALE.

    3. You develop a friendly relationship with your list on an ongoing basis.

The negatives of building a list is that, unless you set up an autoresponder in advance, you can't decide to take off for a couple of weeks/months, the way you can with your niche Amazon/ Adsense sites. And if you promote things based on current events (i.e. the weather, a big storm, whatever is happening this week politically, etc, it can be virtually impossible to write these emails in advance.) I find that many of my most responsive emails are something I've tied into current events - people love being "in the know" and current!

Its a cruel world out there. John is correct is "churn and burn" I used to be a Broker and we would sit back and watch the young guns come into the business and beat their heads up against the wall, and then give up.

      We called them "woodpeckers"

After they burn themselves out they would quit. We would split up their leads and keep on trucking. That is the way it was. Every once in a way one would come along and had a little common sense. He would ask the right questions and take the time to learn the business. And behold he would be one of the boys.

The only thing you should be working on is building your list and then protect it with good information, not beat it to death with promotion after promotion.

I don't know how long someone could last with that "churn and burn" concept. I never tried doing it. But my Grandfather use to say; It always swings back.

Grandpa said a lot of things. But I think he met what ever you do it goes out there and multiples time 10 and comes back to you.

That is a scary thought. Anyways, the last time I heard some of those guys are in a mental institution.

I believe a list can manifest itself in several ways. Aren't Skype connections a list? Twitter followers? Feed subscribers? LinkedIn contacts? I think they are.
