Article Marketing - As It SHOULD Be Done

No, maybe not *should* be done - but a way that is VERY effective.

You judge from the sequence of events in the last 10 minutes.

I read Dana's post about making the Kindle bestseller list. To locate a site I knew about, John Kremer's "Book Marketing Network", I typed in "101 book marketing" into Google (as I remembered it as the title of John's book on the subject).

Glancing down the results, I saw this one:

"Book Marketing 101: How to Use Your Blog to Sell Your Novel"

It was on Ezine Articles. Wondering what it might be about, I clicked. Mind, at this time I was merely curious. A 300-word SEO'd word-soup piece would have got me X-ing out instantly.

What I found was a 900+ word ARTICLE.

Informative. Entertaining. And it contained some useable tips.

So I looked at the signature link. It pointed to a site called "E-book Endeavors", which was about how to sell and promote ebooks (another area I'm interested in).

I clicked on it (no surprise, right?) - and arrived here:

This blog, in addition to having an appealing design and layout, had some excellent posts, all of them on topic. What's more convincing, the posts FOLLOWED the advice taught in the Ezine Articles piece.

What a refreshing surprise! ;-)

And just as the author said in the article, my eye roved over to the sidebar, and noticed the books she has written. (They are not in the genre I read, if they were, I'd have ordered at least one of them on the spot!)

And I wondered...

Isn't this how article marketing SHOULD work - every time?

Take a person from casually interested to curious, then deliver a wallop by way of giving so much value they are compelled to seek more, and then sustain that promise too - and nearly instantly convert a browser into an admirer... who will then go out on one of the biggest marketing forums and TELL OTHERS about you?!

This article did exactly that.

And now you're hearing about a style of article marketing that plain works.

How will you use it?

What are your thoughts about how this works?

Any ideas to make it even better?

    Before anyone realized that they could manipulate Google through Article Marketing, this was the only way people did Article Marketing...

    Of course, I know that you know that, but most people reading your comments may not...

    People are always asking the question, "How do people make money with article marketing?"

    I write articles and this is something that frustrates me.
    I like to provide good quality articles that are useful. But every once in a while I have seen articles that are not useful online and I want to rewrite them! ha.
    I totally agree,
    People who use articles:
    Please make them good quality, with useful information and easy to read!
    (I have also noticed the other side where too much is crammed in making it hard to follow)

    Article marketing has been very often (if not always) discussed as part of link-building and PR boosting strategies. But really, isn't it obvious that marketing (in general) works best if you are able to provide people with something of good quality?

      Obvious to whom?

      It should be obvious to the masses, but it is not...

      I suspect the majority believe that shortcuts are possible, and they use them at every opportunity.

      I suspect too many people are constantly thinking, "Quality? I don't have time for that. Show me the shortcut."

      Article Marketing is not always discussed as part of link building and PR boosting.

      However, those people who cannot see a deeper meaning to article marketing will only talk about those things you mentioned.

      Those of us, including Dr. Mani, who have made a lot of money with article marketing walk to the beat of a different drum.

      • Things will change, hopefully...

        Presently: A lot of webmasters use up tiny bits of their time to churn out
        300++-word write-ups written for the sole purpose of building backlinks...

        They blast it as syndicated or republished or resyndicated or repurposed
        content all over the Internet, provided those places are dofollow and have
        high Google PR...

        They spend more time developing less onsite content of higher quality...
        They spend more time developing less content for traffic funneling purposes...

        Google now aims to give more credit to original content sources. They
        modified their ranking algorithm to do this...

        So, my inference is ---
        If original content sources were given more credit over pages syndicating
        copies of it, legally or illegally, then:

        More webmasters would spend more time building quality content for their
        own sites...
        They would build traffic funneling content for their article marketing
        campaigns, instead of content for high PR dofollow backlink building purposes...

        They would develop traffic funneling content for their other content
        marketing campaigns, instead of content for high PR dofollow backlink
        building purposes...

        Unless they have other interpretations of what Google aims to do with
        their recent Jan 2011 algorithm modification...

    That's what it's all about. Willing to bet that this article may (or may have not) gotten some good syndication as well.

    It's funny - when I search for stuff outside of my business and I run into an article from EZA on the first page, I very rarely click on it. Maybe I'm just biased, but as an internet marketer, that thought of "I know they are trying to sell me something I don't need" comes to my mind unfortunately.

    It's sad when the mediocre and "slapped together in 90 seconds" content started hitting hard. I remember the good ol' days of submitting articles to EZA and getting a plethora of geniune views and clicks. That's before it would ever rank on any SE's, too.

    Oh well - At least sticking to quality content and good habits has paid off thus far (and probably will continue to do so).

    Very nice find and kudos to the author for the entire article marketing system they are utilizing. I love it!!!

    Only negative thing I could see is that the article has received very few page views which means the article cannot be found easily. Shame really because there was work put into the content by the author.

        I definitely agree with what the majority of posters are stating. Article marketing's primary objective should focus solely on bringing high quality content to readers...

        But with that being said...isn't it possible to have quantity with quality?

        Can't you write five 300-500 word posts in an hour or two that deliver content that benefits your audience?

        I definitely believe you can, and I'm fairly confident Bill (tpw) thinks you can, also. He actually created a product that focuses on achieving this feat.

        And might I add...it's a pretty damn good product, too!

        Nope.....that's not one of my pen names. That particular niche topic is not one of my preferred subjects to write on (I have a list of about 30 topics I like).

        I do wonder if the author knows that his article is being dicussed over here. He/she is probably seeing this increase in page views and wondering what the heck is going on...

            Like I said before, IF any of the books had been in genres I read,
            I'd have bought at least one.

            And the article did its job by getting me to the site and looking at
            the books listed there. It's the job of the copy/cover/site/blog to
            convince me to buy the books, imho

    I completely agree and article marketing should always be done like this. However, as a writer I get more requests and orders for content that is not like this and is much shorter. It is funny to me because I make more money for myself when I write longer and useful content, but nobody ever wants this type of content.

    Was too long for me - I don't have the time to leisurely read a 900 word article. Kids, work, bills, grocery shopping.

    Although the concept is refreshing and it may work for you, it wouldn't have worked on me.

      Well I read on this forum that a good writer can write 11 500word articles per hour.

      I bet that 900 word article took like.. 2 hours or a month or something to write.

      They could have written 19482 300 word articles in the time and linked them to 403 squeeze pages with opt-in lists. And THAT would make them more money FOREVER. Because quality articles to quality squeeze pages like that, will NEVER be cracked down on. Because they don't break any current rules. And in 10 years they'll still be ranking.

      So, I think they failed. 100% Nooooooo good.

      Out of interest, with the kids, work, bills and grocery shopping, which I think we can all agree are top priority, do you often read 350 word ezine articles, get siphoned to a squeeze page, then purchase a product?

    That is an awesome example of article marketing!

    Differently a good way to get high quality visitors to your website.

    One thing I think people get mixed up when it comes article marketing is there is a big difference between article marketing and link building.

    A lot of courses out there claim to be teaching you article marketing, but in reality they are simply teaching you how to build links to your website.

    There's a huge difference.

    One of them produces results for one area of your business the other produces results in another area of your business

    So, I think that is an important distinction to make when you're talking about article marketing.

    What a small world. The author of that article is someone I've been following for a few years, now. Although lately she hasn't updated the website very often, I first found her on writingforyourwealth.com. She has some great info for the beginner, and I was certainly in that group back when I initially found the blog.

    I didn’t like the beginning. It indicates that this article was written for silly authors who have no idea about what to write in a blog.

    Besides that, using a blog to talk about your books’ content is an old idea. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

    I don’t think that this is a good model.

    This is what a good article should do, lead people to the resource box. But not everybo0dy are capable of producing the same quality, although of course with more effort, it is quite achievable.

    Wonderful thread, Dr. Mani!

    Those of you complaining about the long word count, heads up:

    I just finished printing out a super long article that's way better than a couple WSOs on the same topic lately.

    This 2,005 word article printed out at 11 pages, is free on a blog, and had the exact info in step-by-step format that I was looking for - with no bonus videos, ebooks and junk packaged in for fluff that had nothing to do with the topic.


    How refreshing to find GOOD, quality, targeted content

    You need to look at your articles closely.

    Do the headers attract readers

    Does the body stimulate interest.

    Does the resource box make the reader want to read more of your content


    Oh and the really important one are you writing about things people want to read about.

    This approach is interesting, provides value and is a valuable exemplar in showing how article marketing should be done.

    I'm sure there is general consensus that this process works, but it does require some time, effort and creativity to implement properly - this is where I think the average marketer falls short, and starts looking for shortcuts around this admittedly time-consuming process.
