Simple question.......

Could someone please clarify? What is the difference between "submitting your site to the search engines" and getting your site "indexed"? Are they the same thing? Is this what Google Webmaster tools does? What happens if you DON'T do these things, you still get "found", don't you? What is actually happening here?
Thanks
Sue

In short, you need to submit a site to the search engines for them to be able to find (or "index") it, if you have no back links on an already indexed site.

If you have 0 backlinks on indexed sites then google has no way of ever discovering your website unless you tell it about it.
