How NOT to earn my business in 3 easy steps.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not trying to call anyone out here, I've deleted the pertinent information to protect the identity of the sender.

I just wanted to give some insight as to how I (a prospect in this case) interpreted this solicitation and why it made me choose NOT to work with this individual. Keep in mind that I actually AM interested in working with a copywriter for this particular product.

===================================

Step 1.
Come off in a condescending tone.

Hi,

My name is ******* and today I was checking out products to promote to my subscribers on Clickbank, and I stumbled upon your sales letter.

I must say that I really like the concept of your product, and I think that you can make a lot of money with it... the question is, why are using such an old school sales letter?

How do you expect to make sales with that sales letter?
Step 2. Assume that I'm not making any money with said sales letter (I am in fact converting decently)

Also assume that I am "in need of some money"..

You are leaving thousands of dollars on the table with that letter, and I'm sure that you're in need of some money... Right?
Step 3. Provide absolutely no way for me to find out more about your work other than googling your name, figuring out that there's no trace of anyone with that name, that I can find, in the copywriting business.

To further complicate things, the only person with that (rather unique) name happens to be someone on various internet marketing forums asking very beginner questions about marketing.

Listen, I have a copywriting business that can really help your online business grow. If you're interested in securing a better sales letter for your product, reply to this email and I'll be happy to show you some samples of my work.

Also, we're having a special right now and you can get your sales letter with a HUGE discount.

There are Clickbank vendors with a product just like yours and they're making thousands of dollars each and every month.
Bonus Step! Insult my sales letter.. haha.

Affiliates will never promote a product with a sales letter like yours, because it's just not going to convert.

With a powerful sales letter, affiliates will feel a lot more comfortable promoting your product, and when they do promote it, you'll make a lot more money without any extra effort on your side.

I would love to hear back from you, so don't hesitate to respond to this email with any questions!
Look, I'm not saying that my sales letter is the best converting out there, because it's not... not even close...

But this particular one is definitely hitting the average 2% on cold traffic mark.. so it's not so shabby.

Furthermore, don't assume that the only sales letter I have is the one you see... I have 3 completely different sales letters at this very moment testing and tweaking to figure out which modality works best with this audience (video, text or combo)..

==================

Anyhow, I just thought this might be a lesson for those of you out there "pounding the pavement" per se, trying to find business...

    Hi Mr2Monster,

I agree I'd never respond to such a rude and assumptive sales pitch.

If I was honest it reminds me of the old "Nigerian inheritence" scam. If the person sending this sends it to enough people, some of them will be doubting there own sales letter and some won't be converting, some will be desperate and some will be mug enough to respond.

It's funny how someone would expect to hear back from you after insulting you... geez.

Sure, he won't get you're business, but what's sad is that thousands of people are getting those letters and falling for it.

Perhaps he thinks that there's a better chance you'll respond by pushing your buttons with this approach.

I'm still not sure what the purpose of this email is though. Did he insult you all through this letter, and then still ask if he could promote your affiliate product? lol

Yeah I know... if you throw enough spaghetti at the wall, you're bound to get a noodle or two to stick...

I thought about this, and truth be told I did respond. There's no way in hell I'm working with the dude, but I did email him and give him some "constructive criticism" on his email (which was probably a waste of time, i know).

The quotes above are the entire letter, just divided so I could respond to each part. His purpose was trying to get me to hire him for a copywriting gig for a product that I have on clickbank.

Needless to say, he's not getting the job.

Well, it seems like he tried to lure you in under false pretenses though, because he mentions early in his email that he's looking for products to promote to his subscribers - when he surely has no intention of doing that at all? LOL

It just sounds like a fake ploy to get you interested in reading the rest of his email.

Agreed.. The point that people should take away, I guess, is that the whole encounter left a bad taste in my mouth.. Not a great way to earn business if you ask me.

I think so too. If he was honest and genuine right from the start, and didn't launch into all this criticism about your sales copy, you might have at least started a dialogue with him, opening the door to a potential job.

It's like me of going into a retail shop to pitch my ability to get there website improved and saying...

"Hi, I'd like to help you improve your website rankings, by the way has anyone told you look b****y awful in those clothes, I couldn't do anything about your site until you sorted your hair out too"

Genius. I wonder how many people would want someone to write their sales letter who shows such an ability to alienate their target market in so few words

If the guy can't even manage to sell himself, how on earth can he help you sell more of your products.

My thoughts exactly. If you are writing a letter to sell your ability to write a sales letter it should be.... better.
