My 2 Yr Old Gmail account Deleted! For NO reason! Are You Backingup Your Gmail?

When I tried logging in my Gmail account today, I was shocked at the message "No Account Found". I panicked! I have been using that email only to communicate with clients and never sent bulk email - No Spam email! Haven't changed the way I've used my account since I opened it.

I googled about deleted gmail and there have been recent reports of a wave of gmail accounts being deleted for no reason. The explanation that is being put forward is that hackers could have logged into some accounts and send spam emails!

Google detects spam activities and simply block and delete your Gmail! No Buts, no warning whatsoever! As we know we are always at Google's mercy - we get slapped at Adwords, SEO and so on. Why then can't Google just decide to close YOUR FREE Gmail account. Think about it! I have always imagined such a scenario but never thought it could really happen!

So here goes all your contacts, your emails, your google docs, your youtube account, your google analytics ! Everything vanished!

Anyway, fortunately I had some partial backup (although old) . I really wish I had a FULL 100% backup.

So, what is the moral of my sad case? :

1. If you are in Gmail - always backup all your data. There are services like backupify , zoho that will do automatic backup . There are plenty of others...Google for "Gmail backup service". Else, do manual backup on your hard drive or flash disk.

2. If you can avoid Gmail or any free email service that's even better !!!

3. Always have a good antivirus AND anti malaware . You need BOTH. Many antivirus actually dont stop malaware. You can use AVG internet security or Norton internet security.

You would think that no one can guess your password but in reality hackers don't even need your password to log in your account. Here is how they do it -lets say you have a malaware quietly sitting on your pc in the background. You go on and logged in your gmail in your browser. you send some emails and open another tab and read warrior forum. The malware gets activated and uses your browser that is logged in gmail. The script can send emails to all your contacts - Imagine all your clients getting from you all those "Viagra Offers !". Embarassing I know.

Bottom line -

Backup Everything
Backup Everything
Backup Everything
Protect Your PC

Thanks for the warning. I'm not surprised. This kind of action is typical of Google's regard for the people who use their services.

Man, what a bummer. While I never had a gmail account removed, I have lost whole hard drives. I feel your pain.

Yes, back up and back up the back up!

I think there's an important lesson there and that's to back everything up, I had my gmail account hacked not so long ago but I managed to regain control and luckly I never got it deleted. Thanks for the warning anyway!

I use Thunderbird to download and send messages from my gmail account.

So in other words I have my entire gmail all backed up locally since I do all my work locally.

I can also backup my thunderbird by simply copying the profile folder which is something that can be done manually or automated.

Both my thunderbird and my gmail are searchable.

I've been a Mozilla thunderbird user since 2002. Its a great email client.

Kind of the same for me.

I stopped using Gmail and started using a self hosted email address that I access via Microsoft Outlook and have my Gmail account forwarded to my main one.

I used to use Thunderbird but I found it really buggy. I much prefer Outlook.

Google wants to make cloud computing ubiquitous, but this is a very important reason why many people aren't altogether fond of the idea. I'd rather keep my docs, contacts and other vital data on my own machine backed up on my own backup drive. If you're at the mercy of someone else, well, you're at the mercy of someone else, and open be affected by any decisions they make or actions they take, whether or not you deserved any of it.

    I've got 8-10 Gmail accounts.
If you've got a mailing list I might be on it with one. That's mostly what I use them for. And an additional Paypal address. And I do use one for MY main email address, because I trust Googles servers more than I trust my shared hosting servers, and even use it for product registrations.

But, I download ALL my Gmail with my POP client. (It's allowed, it's in Gmail's settings). I do this several times every hour. So, everything in my Gmail accounts is already backed up on my hard drive. Plus, I visit every Gmail account at least once weekly and delete everything from them.

Except, I gotta' stop using a Gmail for purchases. If I ever loose the account I won't be able to get product updates.

    Thanks for the eye opener.

    Edit:

I had one deleted last year. I just used it for opt-in's so it wasn't too bad. It was actually nice. I was immediately unsubscribed from many lists.

I never found out why. So now I use my Mac's Mail software program with my main Gmail account. So everything is downloaded to my email client. Sucks because I liked keeping stuff on their cloud but too risky as what's been happening lately to other folks.

I read from someone else that he lost access to Google Doc's as well. Now that sucks big time! I use Google doc's a lot and never thought of backing it up until these heads up.

Really puts it into chilling perspective how we put so much of our business in Google's hands which they can then take it away without warning or notice.

I wish I knew the reason. I mean I've been using this account as I usually do. Nothing had changed. I don't remember spamming people or anything...I guess once your account is hacked into then you really don't have a clue what happened...

Just Gmail (for now)...But if you have lots of google docs that you haven't backed up them it also means that these go with the gmail account.

So every now and then it's a good idea to download these. The other thing is your contacts. If you have clients' contacts on one gmail then make sure to export that too. If for so e reason you can't access your gmail at least you can still contact them.

It's a desktop software which means you are actually downloading everything. But like me if you have tons of emails and docs (i.e. huge file) then using this software might not be a practical option.

          Hi everyone,

I have had my blogs, my adsense account and my gmail account blocked all at once by Google.
The reason being that I had too many adsense blocks on one of my blogger blogs.

I contacted Google and explained, that I was not aware of having violated any rules. Could they please explain how my accounts could be reactivated.
A few days later, all my account were reactivated.

This was not the first time this happened to me.

          My lessons learned were.

          a) don't build anymore Blogger blogs.
          b) don't have a Gmail account as a main email account, only for junk emails. Never for things like Paypal.
          c) Look for other income sources besides Asense.
          d) But the most important lesson:

          NEVER, NEVER trust Google again.

Hmmm interesting opinions ... Seems Google only blocks / bans / cancels accounts that dont comply with their T&C ... seems reasonable?

I have been a gmail user since the service was invite only .. Never had an issue ... Maybe because i dont mess with T&C's ... probably ....

Just make sure you backup those PST files (outlook) and then make sure you run the latest AV and Spyware detection so you outlook doesnt become a spam server

Lets face it .. According to this post ... His account was suspended because of Adsense T&C's - the account is diabled automatically. His email was retrieved ..

The catalyst is abusing the Adsense service ... That is not Googles Fault ... You agreed to the T&C

So before we all go off freaking out about this ... Abide by the T&C's and there will be no reason to not continue providing you a great service ...

Just to put a few things straight.

My blog was reactivated by Google after I asked them what the problem was.

They did not contact me in any way.

I did not change a thing on my blog it still runs as it always had.

I NEVER got a warning beforehand saying:
"Hey you are violating this or that rule, watch or we will block ALL your accounts"

I did not get an explanation afterwards.

Now anyone tell me what other service will that to you.

Only one that does not really care.

Don't make the mistake to think: "How this won't happen to me, because I am a good boy, I go by the rules"

I have used Adsense for many years and I am a "good boy" going by the T&Cs in all my sites and blogs.

But if you use Googlemail for Paypal income and this happens to you you are going to say where did I go wrong and start seearching through all your accounts, be it site, blog, email, adsense and good luck if you can find which rule was violated and where this was done.

Yes definitely backup at all times. I was on my other gmail just now and a red message appeared at the top saying "Your account is being accessed in another location...". Basically someone got into my account in another country! So when I clicked on that message I was able to "log out" everywhere. I quickly then logged in again and changed my password.

I kind of freaked out for a few seconds but at the same time it's great that gmail gives you such a warning.

So do change your passwords regularly...

So guys watch out it seems hackers are really targetting gmail accounts.

Has this happened to anyone lately?

Luckily when I saw that red message warning in my Gmail, I could see where my account was being accessed (which country and IP). So I blocked that IP, logged out from all locations and immediately changed my password. But what really surprises me is how hackers get in..I mean my password is not easy to guess...

The thing I hate about hearing a story like this is that Google is just about forcing you to connect all other accounts to one google account. Like youtube, adwords, adsense, etc. I hate being forced into those kind of mergers for many different reasons - and this one just topped the list.
