Regarding your Lists... is this ok?

After purchasing a product, I'm often asked to opt in if I would
like to receive updates to that product.

I find that not long after that, I begin to receive offers that are
unrelated to the product and are not updates.

If I were to unsubscribe, then should any updates be released,
which I signed up for in the first place, I would not get them.

So I was wondering, is this the norm with your lists and is it ok
to send offers beyond the scope of what they signed up for?

You've brought up something that irritates the heck out of me!

If a marketer asks me to join a list for product updates only, then that's all I want to see from him/her. It's just not right to hold a person captive and afraid to unsub because they want the updates.

BUT Peggy! you mean to tell me you didn't WANT the Affiliate assassination plus after you bought the ebook on poetry marketing? FOR SHAME! (KIDDING)

totally agree and she is right offering anything under the sun instead of building a following and a market based on solving and genuine connection. People buy from people not robots.

Agreed, and it's a shame that so many marketers don't get this. It's so easy to create a separate list for updates, usually at no additional cost to the marketer.

I'm paraphrasing, but someone once said that it takes a lifetime of good decisions to build a good reputation, and a moment of weakness to destroy it.

Thanks Peggy, that is exactly the position I am in at the moment...

I feel as though I am being held hostage, so either I forego any updates,
or I am forced to get pummelled with affiliate offers I never signed up for!

When I check my subscription, is usually says something like "Updates for
      Product Name".

It is Internet marketing after all

I do understand where you are coming from but not of of us send out offer after offer

I do send update notices to my list but I'll also send details of free reports and videos i've created around the broad topic you signed up for. I also generally send out a bonus product a few days after you sign up. (Usually so I can stick my tongue out the people who signup and unsubscribe immediately)

However I will on occasions send you details of my other products when I release them or have special offers.

I have on 2 occasions in the past year sent out details of other peoples products because they were good quality and complementary to what you had already received or bought.

Respectfully, if I wanted to be on your "list", I would sign up for your list. IMHO a products update list should be used for the product updates only.

        Thanks Mark,

I don't mind getting something that is related and in the ballpark,
particularly if it is something that was from the person themselves
and then continue to build that relationship.

I also don't mind receiving something new from the same person
if it is something they produced themselves and thought I may
be interested, even if is is unrelated.

I do feel that the "updates" hook is being abused by some people
as an excuse to start sending unrelated affiliate offers though.

            Hey Angela,

A smart marketer will not use this buyers list as an affiliate platform. Very rarely will I send out an affiliate promotion to my actual buyers.

The only way I do this, is if I trust the person I'm sending the traffic to and I know the product is of extreme value.

Now, I will offer upgrades to my customers. Mostly, they are my own products though.

However, a buyers list should be treated a lot differently than a free offer list.

Also, your buyers list should be separated into tiers. Low ticket, medium ticket, and high ticket.

Those buyers list should also be treated differently.

But, to make a long answer short... If you are getting bombarded with irrelevant offers this is probably a list you do not want to be on.

[QUOTE=M Thompson;3306957]It is Internet marketing after all

I think the commenter made this remark with his tongue firmly in his cheek but unfortunately it seems to be a mantra that many internet marketers chant whenever they want to excuse their unethical behaviour.

It's definitely not the norm for any list I run. It does seem to be the norm on many lists of which I'm a member, though.

No, it's not OK in my book.

When folks sign up for one of my lists, they do so knowing what to expect. In return, I do my darnedest to stick to that.

Yes, unfortunately you have signed up to a badly run list imo, it is ok to offer a related offer now and then but bombarding you with unrelated offers is not good + they are not likely to convert that well.

Hi Angela - I don't think this is necessarily the norm but it does seem to be happening more and more. Like you I find it very irritating and have unsubscribed and then remembered I wanted the updates!!!!!!

Not sure what the answer is

When I ask people to sign up to receive upgrades, I mention specifically that it's for upgrades of the products as well as information on other products and services. When they do sign up they are actually signing up to the upgrade list and my main list. In case they want to stop receiving the additional info and offers, they can unsubscribe at any time from my main list and still be on the product list.

That has worked well for me up till now.

Email the author and tell them. I've emailed a lot of Internet marketers in the past an usually they act totally surprised. As if email marketing is a one way conversation.

Bring it up with them and let them know that it is a problem.
