Should get Dedicated Hosting Server for Social Networking Site?

I'm trying to start a couple social networking sites, but the problem is, I hear that I can't do that a shared hosting server unless it's less than a dozen people.

The thing is I can't afford paying at least $100 for something that I already have as essential for $10 per month.

Does it really matter if I start a social networking site on a non-dedicated server?

If not, what other alternatives do I have to not pay $100 per month for a dedicated server just for a social networking site?

Why are you creating this site?
How much money do you think you can earn from it per month?

Yes you can start on shared hosting but, your host will shut you down when you start to hog the resources.
I doubt 12 users will tie up the server though. Even if they were all signed in at once.

Dedicated servers aren't necessarily all that expensive, Jason. Check out some of the special offers at Superb.net (~$20.00/month!! ). I've used them myself in the past, and they're very good.

There'd perhaps still be management costs involved, though (unless you can do that sort of thing yourself?), but just sayin'.

Keep the site on the shared hosting until your making enough to pay for the dedicated, eventually you will need dedicated if the site gets busy but i guess that wont be for a while yet.

If you have not got the shared hosting yet make sure you read the TOS before you sign up for anything as some companies have different rules. If you are going for dedicated now have a look at FDC servers they seem to be pretty popular.
