That is very true! I also like to check my emails for ideas when writing my own emails to my list, writing newsletters, checking out marketing strategies from other marketers I subscribe to, etc.

Glad to hear I'm not the only crazy one.

I have virtually every email I have sent or received since 1996. I can only search those from late 2002 forward, but I have the older ones stored in case I ever want to prep them for search. Those emails have proven very valuable to me in many different ways, including researching projects and resolving various issues that have arisen long after deals were done.

It seems most people delete emails soon after they arrive. I have always thought of them as a personal historical resource.

I usually archive everything that isn't spam anyway. For the really important ones though, I'll label them in case I forget what keyword to search for.

It's very interesting to see how different marketers' newsletters have changed (or not).

If you check those emails you will find that about 214,000 of them came from me, but you still haven't bought anything from my links. Gunna keep sending them 'til you buy!

Really, I save almost all in one account as well. You are right on target. People complain about promotional emails, but they really are a terrific resource just as you said. By studying the subject lines and content you can get a great, free education on how successful marketers do things. Great for pointing that out. I wouldn't delete mine for the world. Thanks! --Mike

When I first started list building with Safelists etc I set up a seperate acct just for them and then applied filters to organize and do the same for specific emails to categorize them for copy -swipe files.

I should add, that it is also a great way to learn not how to end up in the spam folder. Right now I have 2000 plus in my spam folder, that i did not count in my original number. Most of that is true spam, but there are a ton of big time marketing names that should not be there. You can also learn from their mistakes, so you don't end up in the wrong place as well.

If you look I bet a lot of the emails that ended up in the spam folder are emails from a hosted solution and not an autoresponder company.

I agree that copies of emails are a great resource - but that you need to be a bit picky.
I have signed up to so many lists that I just file most emails for possible later reference.
When I discover a great marketer, I then go back to browse some of the emails he or she has sent.
But when I find a scammer or 'me too' kind of guy, his messages get deleted and I opt out of his list

George, I definitely like your thinking here! I'm glad I'm not the only insane person who never deletes his emails. I have trounced you on numbers though - as of right now, I have 382,877 emails in my Gmail inbox and 4,577 emails in my Spam folder!

Heck, I even learn a lot from the spammers. Say what you want about them,
and no, I'm not defending spam, but some of these guys write killer ad copy.
It's a shame that they don't use their skills for good rather than evil. But I
have picked up quite a few "catch phrases" and ideas from some of this spam
that have actually worked in a legit email marketing campaign. A lot of these
guys truly understand the power of mystery, scarcity and a killer offer at
an unreal price.

Like I said, it's a shame that they don't use their skills for good.

I absoutely can not stand to have that many emails anywhere. Spring cleaning is kind of an addiction and I have to do the same with emails. You guys have ultimate patience and tenacity. It makes me crazy to even think about that much space being utilized by old emails.

I'm the same. Every so often I go through my inbox and delete a ton of emails. I keep only the best ones for my email swipe file, and I know that the few thousand I DO keep are really good. I actually don't see the point in keeping as much as 280,000 - surely the vast majority of those must be junk.

Travis Sago is one marketer I follow very closely in this regard. His emails hardly read like emails, it is as if he is having a conversation with you on a personal level. Very few marketers can do it. Plus he sends the right mix of informative content and promotional content unlike the other Gurus where you have to really scratch your head to remember the last time they ever sent an informative email.

I definitely agree, he's one of the few marketers that has truly mastered the art of email marketing, and his emails are always well thought out, conversational and tend to deliver a lot of value even when he's promoting something because he makes it a point to get very well-acquainted with it, unlike your typical email marketer.

Haha - I thought you were going to turn that into a time management thing, and say that with new search features and the capacity of most inboxes these days, it's a waste of time to try to keep your inbox to a manageable level (seriously - one of the best things I've done recently was stop caring how many unread messages there are in my inbox).

Before I switched to GoogleApps/Gmail, I couldn't imagine keeping that many emails because the search features always konked out in the middle of a search because of the amount of messages I had.

Now that I am on Gmail/Google Apps for everything, it's great. If I can't remember who sent an email, just a keyword or two and I've got the email. It's great.
