Do You Hyperlink Your Order Page To Appear In A New Window Or Same Window?

I was wondering if any of you have tested your conversions to see if the results vary based on hyperlinking the order page to appear in the same window vs new window.

Is there a preferred way? If so, are there any reasons for the same?

    Interesting question...

I haven't tested one over the other, so I'll be interested to see the results if someone has.

I've always put the order page in the same window, because I want to (at least psychologically) limit the person's options. Removing the sales page and replacing it with the order page keeps the forward momentum going and removes a distraction.

It's much the same reasoning behind limiting the options on the sales page, or on a squeeze page. You want people going from Point A to Point B, not making a lot of side trips...

If you're talking about a window that pops up then a lot of people, myself included, have pop ups blocked. This even blocks pop ups that I've initiated, like when I get a PM here on WF. Some people, who obviously aren't so savvy, might think the pop up is some sort of virus or something and freak out.

What I've seen with a lot of landing pages is that they might have an email submit on the sales page but you have to click through a link to get to the order form.

I would say same window is the best option. I totally agree with what John says. It kinda limits the choice, psychologically "there's not turning back now!" lol. visitors need to keep moving forward towards the order page. A click is a step forward. So if they still have many options after a few clicks, they'll just stand in place, take their time and maybe not buy.

Me too, I have a pop up blocker on firefox and a new window can be annoying. Now if it's on a new tab, it's different... But I would imagine the conversions to be as good if not better if the order page opens in the same window.

    my 2 cts...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. John, what you said makes a lot of sense and most of the order pages I looked at open in the same window. I am going to test this and see the results.

This may be old school now, but I believe the general rule of thumb is if the link goes to another place on the domain, do same window. If the link goes to an external website, new window.

So if you are selling a product on Clickbank, would you direct the users to a new window?

Ha, good point - didn't think about that! For affiliate links, I would say same window.
