it depends on the technology used.
if they are saved on database you can find matching ranks with some database functions e.g. full text search

They can use copyscape or search in Google to find out if something has been published elsewhere.

its very easy job to be done. You can do it yourself if you want. Just google check copied content and you will have a lot of required resource...

Since when has EZA or any other article directory apart from Buzzle required unique content?

If that's the case why do EZA recommend you publish your article to your site first then to them.

Why on Earth would the same company even bring out a plugin to make this process even easier for you.

Dulicate content is the same article on the same site more than once.

If you mean how do they check if someone has stolen your article and tried to re submit it to the same directory, well it's already there and that is duplicate content.

Good points, Richard. I remember well when I was a newbie and thought that duplicate content meant the same thing as syndication.

Unfortunately content scraping makes it look like I'm duplicating when I'm not. What do you guys do about that?

as long as it's by the same author it's fine. it's indeed called syndication and not "reprehensible content duplication" and yeah EZA is totally fine with that but I wasn't aware of that for a long time.

by the way, I would advise you sometimes to look up your articles on google (by putting a paragraph in quotes) to check if anyone stole it meaning they duplicated it without a link back to the source or your resource box intact.

      Well said Louise,

I thoroughly like your description of the duplicate content myth, reprehensible describes it very well indeed.
