How Should I Monetize My SEO Blog?

I work for an SEO company. Part of my day revolves around the upkeeping of the company blog and building other free blogs to create a platform to build links and drive traffic to our main website. Anyway, one of these blogs I have been doing in "secret", meaning its mine and I take a little more time with it and write much more detailed articles. I am getting between 50 and 100 uniques a day, which I am sure I can increase, and I would like to try and monetize this blog now.

From reading other Warriors I think:

Its a good thing, because it is something I love, so I find writing about it very easy.

Its something I know a lot about.

What I am thinking:

I will register with aWeber and set up an account.

I will write a free report. This can either be a 5 part SEO course OR an ebook?? Not too sure which one.

There are countless products that I can promote to this type of market.

What do you think about this? I would really appreciate any comments or advice!

    the idea is good.....

    but

isn't there anything in your service contract that stops you from doing this ? you may be putting your job on the line.

if the company you work for has an affiliate program, and you market it , they will probably appreciate it, though

No there isn't. I didn't have to sign a restraint of trade or anything. Mostly these articles are written at home, and as I don't have the internet there I just upload them in the morning at work. The domain belongs to me as does the hosting.

      Go for it!
      But...
Just double check with your boss that you are uploading stuff to your blog. There's nothing worse than being caught out and having to explain yourself.

      They may even say no!
At least you know where you stand. Don't lose your job over it.

It sounds like you have the right idea and know what you are doing.

I think it is fantastic that you are going out on your own. You'll never be able to build your own business when you are just doing work for someone else and giving them the benefits!

Sounds like your main goal is to get opt-ins and build a list. Is that correct?

One thing I learned from Jeff Johnson was that he said that IM's always put opt-in forms on their blogs. He said instead of doing that, do it the way I describe below.

Put a banner on your blog that is clickable and goes to an opt-in page (otherwise known as a squeeze page or landing page). That way it gives you the opportunity to write a little bit more about why they should opt-in.

Also another tip. When they click on that banner, make sure that it opens in a separate window. The reason being is that if you have it take you from the blog to opt-in, eventually they will just close the browser and end up surfing elsewhere.

But if you click the banner on the blog and it opens a separate window, when they are done with that, your blog is still open.

Thanks Matt, I agree. See the SEO part comes pretty easy. I want to make a kick ass course that people will really enjoy (examples, exercises etc.)

Its the marketing part that I think I will need to work on. But hey, that's what this forum is for!

This is a great idea. I have marketed a few CB SEO products in the past and find that the conversion rate is really good. If you are getting solid and steady traffic it's definitely a no-brainer. Very excited for you!

You are absolutely on the right track. Create an opt-in on your blog to start generating your own list.....an email list is much better than those who subscribe to your via RSS.

Give them a good 5 day course....and then market something to them after you have established some trust with them during your free 5 day course.

    Best of luck!
