How long should a domain name be? I have seen an exact match domain name in the credit cards niche that is 31 characters long, gets roughly 3,500 exact monthly searches, and it's already in Google's index and it's available for registration. Should I register this domain name? Please share you thoughts on this.

Ideally, a domain name should not be over 20 characters, although longer ones are often purchased.

If a domain name of 31 characters got a HUGE amount of monthly searches, then I might consider buying it, but not for only 3500 searches per month.

Domain names can be of any length up to 67 characters. You don't have to settle for an obscure domain name like avab.com when what you mean is AcmeVideosAndBooks.com.

Having said that, there appears to be some disagreement about whether a long or short domain name is better.

Some argue that shorter domain names are easier to remember, easier to type and far less susceptible to mistakes: for example, "getit.com" is easier to remember and less prone to typos than "connecttomywebsiteandobtainit.com".

Which would I go for? I'd go for the shorter name if I can get a meaningful one, but I'm not averse to longer names. However, I would probably avoid extremely long names verging on 67 characters. Aside from the obvious problem that people might not be able to remember such a long name, it would also be a chore typing it and trying to fit it as a title on your web page.

If it is already in the index, I would take it. But maybe don't build a serious business on it, use it rather as a satellite.

Just think about what you would want to type into your address bar. If you start getting shirty after ??? characters, think about how others would get shirty. I don't like entering anything over 15 characters - but that's just me so my domains are no longer than 15 characters. My 2c.

If you were relying on links to market the website then the length of the domain wouldn't be as important as needing the URL to be remembered.

Long domaind require good spellers and reliable memories!

Although all of the above is valid, I'll like to ad two things:
        1. You've to add 3 more characters to your domain.(com, net, org, etc)
        2. Test, test and test more.
