1258 "Likes" versus 39 "Tweets" - What's Going on! Is Twitter Dying?

Of late, I've noticed that the number of tweets across many different blogs are really paling in comparison to facebook's "Like"

Some popular sites that have breaking news these days are getting WAY MORE "Share", "Recommend" or "Like" as compared to "Tweet" or "Retweet"

Sometimes the difference can be so appalling that it makes embarrassing reading for Twitter to be honest. (For example I have seen one blog post where by Facebook absolutely thumps Twitter, 1258 Likes to 39 Retweets)

Anyone experiencing that with their sites?

Is there a reasoning behind this? (Would love to hear all your views!)

P.S. I had actually spent a bit of time writing an eBook on Twitter Marketing - How to Tweet properly, on what is the best way to build a loyal following etc.

To start the discussion ball rolling, I actually still think Twitter is quite alive in my opinion but the fact that people are "retweeting" so little now as compared to the number of people "Sharing"

This is just really puzzling to me.

Here is the eBook link (No Opt in whatsoever) - Check it out alright!

Among other things, to tweet about something, I have to say something.

In that case, those 39 Tweets may be more valuable than the 1258 likes because the people were sufficiently motivated to say something about it as opposed to simply clicking a button.

Even a trained monkey could do the latter while none could do the former.

Twitter has just way been overwhelmed by noise these days. Some people are being dramatic and deleting their facebook accounts. But most people I follow just seem to use it a lot less.

Twitter is huge but facebook is a monster.

I also think twitter is'nt as mainstream as facebook just yet. I have tons of friends who all use FB like a religion but have never even bothered with twitter (yet).

Its probably different in different parts of the world but I think twitter at the moment for the most part has more of a tech savvy crowd.

Twitter, at least in the US, peaked last year. That's all everyone was talking about. Now it's definitely on a downward trend. At least that's what it appears.

I've noticed that facebook is a far more popular sharing option than twitter. I've seen it on multiple sites for multiple articles. One article can have thousands of facebook shares or likes, but only a handful of tweets.

I can think of a music video that has over 360k facebook shares, but only about 8k tweets.

It might be worth experimenting with to see if you can do better by just focusing on getting your articles shared via facebook rather than other options like email and twitter.

Liking something on facebook is just saying that you like it. While tweeting about something is like telling everyone to read it. I think it's much easier for people to just like something than asking all their friends to go read something. Besides, many people are what some call "like slut" they like any and everything they find even a little bit interesting. Tweeting or sharing it on facebook on the other hand is completely different.

If Like we just have to click once,, but twitter we have to think what we need to say before tweet and the limit is within 140 words..

Twitter does not have games, but Facebook does.

This results in more average ordinary people using Facebook on a daily basis. My wife and all of her friends are on Facebook. None of them have Twitter accounts.

Therefore, Twitter is not as popular as Facebook, so Likes are going to get more traction than Tweets.

Now, if you could buy banner ads within FarmVille, you could get a lot of eyeballs to your site. Would be fun. They're out there working their farm and this plane flies by with a banner with your blurb. Or maybe you can give people free cows with your logo branded on them.

As many already have mentioned it simply is because facebook is much more mainstream. And it is easier to like something pretty crappy than tweet about it. I could like "10 things YOU SHOULDN`T DO with your girlfriend", or whatever. But I would not tweet about it.

My Facebook is private and I rarely share anything (or "like") anything that I believe someone else won't find funny. I say "funny" because, I don't "like" things on Facebook that aren't comical in nature -- or aren't worthy of someone spending their time reading. However, in regards to Twitter, I can tweet about anything I find online, related to the niche I blog about, random thoughts, frustrations, etc.

I see Facebook as a more social medium and Twitter as both social and business friendly.
