How to charge for ranking sites?

I have recently ranked a friend's site on the 1st and 2nd page of the 3 major search engines and now he has referred a couple people to me to rank their sites.

The problem that I'm having is these people have paid an online company that has a web based interface to where the person can pick pre-made templates and create their own site for a monthly fee between $50-$100 a month. This fee is supposed to include ranking in the SERPs but when I look at their title and description tags there are no keywords so their site only gets indexed and not ranked so they realized they have been lied too and now they don't trust anyone.

These people don't have a lot of money to spend on SEO since they are small local companies so any advice on how and how much to charge would be helpful.

I have thought about outsourcing it but I don't know where to look for people to do the work for me?

There are plenty of warriors for hire and wsos from people offering services that would do this for you.

What to charge - that's up to you. I don't tend to take clients who don't have money to spend. It all comes down to what the value of a new customer is.

I guess a thought I had is to rank 4-5 sites and charge a small fee and then I can advertise my services using these sites as my projects that I can justify charging more.

I occasionally read people who use outsourcers in other countries that do a great job for a small monthly fee. Don't know where to find these people though.

Haven't thought this through but couldn't you just buy a domain, 301 it to point to the clients site, do the onsite SEO on there site, and the offsite to the domain you control. They stop paying the monthly fee, you pull the 301 and bury there site down the SERPS.

    They'll come back quick!

Price is really going to depend on several factors.
      1. How much work/time will it take to rank?
      2. How much is your time worth?
      3. What can they afford?

Ultimately, you are wasting your time if they can't afford to pay you. If they did become your client, you just bought yourself another headache.

Since you say they are already paying for lousy SEO, just offer to do a better job with the same money they are already paying. For most local niches, a drunken monkey can rank them within a few months max.

I read of people charging 800 a month but that is steep especially for a small local company

Not sure if that would work?

First of all, don't guarantee any rankings. Well, I wouldn't do anyway. Most SEO services do not so why should you?

Secondly, I plan to outsource my SEO work to good operators here on WF and to make a 100% mark-up (double) on the price.
I'm in discussion with Fondi at the moment thinking the same thing
