Lessons you've learned the hard way?

I've been attempting affiliate marketing for a while now and only just made my first sale 2 weeks ago. Problem is, I have no idea how I did it because I was doing multiple methods of promotion. The lesson I learned was to use a tracking id!

Also it sucks being stuck on only 1 sale unable to do anything with that $19 until I get 5 more sales, stupid CDR...

A lesson I've learned the hard way is attempting too many business ideas at the same time, instead of grabbing one and working it until 1: you see it ain't gonna be worth your time and move on, or 2: you see it can make you money if you keep at it, keep trying, tweak it, improve it, expand it, work it and work it some more. Those both take patience and the determination to focus on one income plan to the exclusion of others. Not easy to do when there are so many ways to use the internet to make money. Well I am there now, but have wasted a lot of money on domains that sat empty until they expired, eBooks that didn't have enough info for me to actually implement, membership sites that ended up being more of a distraction than a help...

Thank goodness I am finished with all that over-eager buying and now the money is flowing in rather than out. The knowledge I have gained is the real tool I have always needed.

Start with research and a plan.
Don't invest until you are satisfied with your research and ready to commit.
Stick to the plan (with slight modifications along the way, if needed).
    Monitor your growth.
    Reinvest to grow.

When you start out you learn several lessons the hard way in the first few weeks, a few off the top of my head.

Keyword Research - So So So important, I spent around a week building a 100 page site for a keyword I later found I could not rank for in a million years.

The Only Time Success Comes Before Work Is In The Dictionary - Probably the most vital point of understanding IM. Don't try any get rich quick schemes, don't try push button money and don't try to make it easy. The reason why people are successful is they go beyond "easy" and that little bit more effort you are willing to make than the guy nextdoor will often be the difference.

Don't Buy More Than One Product - Try and get an idea of what course is good and just follow it. For me it was Google Sniper which I later tweaked thanks to some other advice from a few people.

Try It - For about a month I sat on the fence and could not really get my head around the possibility of this working so instead of trying it I did nothing. This only changed when someone said "Okay Jacob, It might not work if you do the work involved, but it sure as hell won't work if you don't do the work involved".

Thats about it from me, I'm sure others will weigh in with some valuable advice too...

The lessons that I have learned over the years are too many to list, so I will share just a few of the big ones.

Diversify Your Income - I was in the online poker biz for a long time. It was my only source of income, but it was good. In 2006 the laws changed and so did my income... and when I say changed, I mean disappeared. Ever since then, I have never relied on a single source of income. I am constantly working on multiple streams, as should you.

Diversify Your Payment Processing - Many of you know my PayPal horror story. If not, I am sure you can guess. It went something like this... $60k frozen, 700 recurring monthly payments stopped, lawsuit. My advice is to always have a backup plan for your processing.

Pay Your Taxes - This lesson goes way back to the late 90's. Uncle Sam decided to take a closer look at me and didn't like what he saw. After that embarrassing and stressful experience, I am now Uncle Sam's fastest paying customer.

Procrastination is Not Your Friend - I am an idea machine and always have been, but I used to be a procrastinator as well. From 1999 to 2005, I watched many of my great ideas get implemented by people much dumber than me. I watched them get rich off of ideas that I had years before and could have implemented much better. Never again. These days, I act and I act fast on my ideas.
