Domain name for website

I am trying to figure out the best domain name for a website. I am going to use the example of vacuum cleaners but that is not the actual niche. However, I am building a site around a physical product.

I usually build out small niche sites. They focus on 5 - 7 products and amazon. They bring in some money, but it takes a lot of sites.

So I am going to try to building some bigger sites. I am aiming for 50 - 100 pages.

Now my question is about domain names. For micro niche sites I always try to find a EMD. I will try to find a name in this order:

besthomevacuumcleaners.com
besthomevacuumcleaners.net
besthomevacuumcleaners.org
best-home-vacuum-cleaners.com
best-home-vacuum-cleaners.net
best-home-vacuum-cleaners.org

If I can't find one of those, I pick another keyword. Now my keywords tend to be long tails. And it seems to me that on a larger site, I don't want such a narrow domain name.

So I have a choice for my bigger site. I can choose either

best-home-vacuum-cleaner.org or vacuumcleanerinfo.com

Now for a micro site of 5 - 10 pages I would pick the first one. But for an authority site, which would you pick and why?

Thanks

Jon

I have purchased the dashes in the past but I hate doing it.

If this is a bigger authority site which you are trying to incorporate some branding, I would say stick with a dot com and the smaller length domain.

I would be thinking about the back-end buyer down the road and who will I attract more to purchase the site. Most will want a dot com (even though this has no bearing really on how well the site can rank).

This is kinda what I was thinking too. A name with no dashes and a dot com even with an extra word in the name is better than dashes. Just wanted to hear someone else say they agreed with me.

I hope this answers your questions, since I am slightly confused by it.
I was simply wondering for an authority site would a longer name with dashes be better or would a shorter name with extra words in it be better.

I think I agree with what you are saying if by "less good" you mean with dashes

i will definitely pick vacuumcleanerinfo.com cos it's great for branding purposes. moreover, domain names with dashes are usually not recommended if you are planning to get that site ranked on Google, which i presume that is your intention with the authority site.

The first domain has too many hyphens in it, so I'd suggest going with the second choice.

Agreed with 'no dashes'. Go for the second one.

I agree that on appearance a name "with no dashes and a dot com even with an extra word in the name is better than dashes" but I've read that the dashes within the title make the search function easier. I don't know if that is true or not, my decisions are typically based on aesthetics.

Thanks all of you guys for chiming in. I was thinking that the no dashes was a much better choice.

It appears that everyone agrees with me. So the name is registered and the I am starting to build the site.

    Here's my tips:

    - Stick with “.com”
    - One Possible Spelling
    - Shorter is Better
    - No Hyphens
    - Keyword Rich
    - Easily Understood
    - Avoid Numeral Substitutions
    - SEO friendly

    Cheers
