What the heck happened to Twitter

I remember just two years ago, everywhere I went, every conference I attended, I felt like every sentence had the word Twitter in it. The next big thing, a new revolution, the new facebook, etc..

Now I rarely hear the word Twitter at conferences and amongst the IM circle (relative to what it used to be like)

Is Twitter gaining or losing momentum as a traffic source for marketers?

What is the future of Twitter for internet marketers?

You think it will be more or less active in 2, 5, 10 years?

I know what you're saying, I've been noticing that too

I find Twitter users to be very intolerant of spam and blatant advertising, and I am myself, maybe that has a lot to do with it's acceptance in Internet Marketing - I think it can be a great traffic source though when used properly, just not for blatant marketing

To my mind, it's been wrecked by continual sell sell sell. The 140 characters make the use of shortened links necessary, and they make the tweets unintelligible, so it looks like a string of spam.....

      • I never liked twitter because I didn't find it easy to enter deep discussions with people and I'm not interested in sharing several times a day what I had for breakfast. Tried it out for several marketing experiments but the crowd in this place seems to be very unresponsive, probably because everyone has 2k+ followers is tweeting a new link every few hours, becoming completely desensitized and blind towards ads.

Unfortunately, Twitter is now a gigantic auto fed spam aggregator.two years ago twitter was an amazing place.

An awesome place to connect with people, and a great place to drive traffic and make sales.

Now, the actual platform is just flooded with spam in my opinion

I still use it because I do get trickles of traffic from it, but I no longer spend time on it.

The only tweets I make are the ones that automatically go out when I post a blog post or when a newsletter goes out of my autoresponder account.

      Talk soon,

Twitter never intended itself to be used by Internet Marketers.

And most Internet Marketers only consume their bandwidth, without giving much value to the community.

Most Internet Marketers who have never been able to figure out how to turn it profitable have abandoned it for greener pastures.

p.s. I still use it, but not at the same level I once did.

And, since that is a part of my niche, I get some who go to my links, as well. Although I don't market on my personal Twitter account.

Never really got into using Twitter at all. I tend to write more at length than the character limit.

I have some specific sites that I use twitter with and I actually get some traffic from Twitter. But those are mostly information posts only. With very low key marketing.

This is exactly what I think and why I never really jumped on the Twitter bandwagon.

A great service, absolutely. Good if you are a big name celeb, guru, etc, absolutely. Good as a pure marketing traffic source...I never thought it was amazing.

Though I suppose there are people out there killing it with Twitter...I haven't personally met any though

I still find Twitter to be highly useful. However, I don't use it for obvious marketing. It offers a great opportunity to brand yourself and become better known in your niche if you offer relevant, original and useful material.

Then you have an audience of regular buyers for your own work, especially, as you've established some credibility and authority with them.

Even so, it is not meant to be used to directly flog products.

It can be used for viral marketing and list building. For instance, over the next few days, I'll give away a free download connected to Valentine's Day. This has value to my particular audience and contains links to an opt-in form that will attract many targeted subscribers. I did the same at Xmas.

The promotions are not heavy-handed and have immediate value to those who download them.

There are many other ways of utilizing a targeted audience if you go to the trouble of building one. Most of the lists of followers I see have been crudely built, using software, and are full of bots and other promoters.

If I want marketing information, I come to Warrior Forum. I use Twitter for other niches. It's like visiting a friend's house: When I visit friends I don't try to overtly sell them products and services. However, in the course of conversation they might get to know that I have something that would interest them. They can be led gently but are alert to any signs of a cudgel.

I use Twitter to follow the authorities in any given niche or interest.

What I mean by that is, if I want to learn and keep up with moon rocks,
              I follow NASA, etc... etc...

There is so much information on there outside of marketing,
that it really amazes me sometimes, you can follow anything, and any expert in their field, verifiable experts.

You might say I use it the complete opposite of marketers, but the research and information is a gold mine, depending on who and what you follow.

Because of the almost real time, to me it is a priceless for

              niche research.

I always think from both sides of a perspective.

It reminds me of safelists. Remember them? They started out as a venue to email people without fear of rejection. But, along came tools that enabled the user to send more emails out, handle more lists, handle more lists in an automated way, and so on. It turned into a madhouse where thousands of emails went in all directions while being managed by software and seen by no human eyes.

Deja vu ? (French for ground hog day). Is this not the same thing all over again? If so, is this the fate of any future social Internet systems? Look at the direction other social sites are taking such as Facebook.

Any system that leaves itself wide open to such innovations is risking failure in the end.

If you are in the USA, keeping warm tonight may be a more pressing concern.

I sure won't be sending any fire your way. For marketers, I think Twitter took a serious shot when you started to see all the different tools to automate following, unfollowing, tweeting, etc.

You could fake being an active tweeter without ever visiting your page or account, and you could broadcast your links to all the other automated follow/unfollow robots.

      It's just history repeating itself.

      > Usenet newsgroups
      > Free-for-all link pages
      > Twitter?

All degenerated into a melee of software programs spamming each other with no actual human involvement.

I've thought about cleaning out my account and giving it another try, but every time I look there's so much clutter that I look for something more productive to do. Maybe I should just kill the account and start over...

I happen to still watch and like VHS tapes. But, I don't think that many other people do.

Anyhow, to many of us here, including myself, all Twitter was to us was a venue to try to sell products to other people. But, curiously, there are some folks that use Twitter to tell other people what they are doing or thinking at different times of the day.

What an odd thing to do. Who cares what folks had for breakfast or what they are wearing today?

If you are looking to spam people with offers in hopes of making money, I think that's pretty much dead...

In some circles, Twitter is still quite popular and people check in on a regular basis. The real value is in getting people to RT and pass around your stuff (you can get some nice traffic). If you don't have that going for you, it just becomes another way to syndicate your content but it won't do much in terms of traffic.

There's also a social proof aspect to it where if people see you have a large number of people following you they feel more comfortable dealing with you and passing along your stuff in hopes of you acknowledging them in front of your following. A larger following also means you can be perceived as a little more credible. Just like with anything else, it's all about perception...

It's been said before, but Twitter currently is the largest collection of SPAM on the Internet.

The whole concept has become flawed. The numerous "Insider Secrets To Twitter Marketing" guides which have come out have played a large role in that as well. Most of those guides preach the following:

Make website > Join Twitter > Follow random people in your niche (or follow anyone) > They follow you back > They spam you > You spam them > They spam you > You spam them > etc, etc, etc. Check frequently to see who you are following but they're not following you back, drop them. This has even been automated.

It may be good for personal use, celebrities, activists, etc.. but for business... especially IM... forget about it!

The "9000" followers I have on Twitter are 99.9% worthless.

It will be interesting to see how Twitter goes about combating this. Just like Google has taken a stand against spam-farms recently, Twitter will have to cut out the spam from within itself if they are to survive in the long run.

So many people continue to misunderstand Twitter, and it's not helped by the preponderance of automated tools out there. I think the niche that's hit the hardest is most obviously IM, but I think there's still a pretty good chance of making your mark in other niches if you endeavor not to sell (I'm not saying it's impossible to make money in the IM niche, just that it's going to be more difficult than before), but to build authority and share tangible value that your followers can appreciate.

While it's still possible to make money via Twitter, it is typically going to be via using it as an indirect channel that takes your visitors to your blogs, videos and websites. I think direct-linking (the way many of the IM Twitter courses recommend it) is almost dead as it is, so one has to avoid that promotional model at all costs.

I am not sure how it applies to IM, but have only learned to enjoy Twitter since I start treating it ruthlessly. Hopefully this provides some insight.

I only use it from an app and I love to unfollow people who post links or quotes. I make a game of unfollowing people, including re-tweeting their motivational quotes with humorously inappropriate edits.

Twitter has lead to a few new friendships, new business for my graphic design company, sales on etsy, and plenty of great conversations.

That being said, I really agree with most of the posters above and don't see how it could work for open marketing, it really seems like a tool for conversation.

This is probably not a shocking revelation, but when you want to find out how the average consumer uses a service or product, your own behavior as a marketer is not a particularly reliable gauge.

Not only have you seen what's behind the curtain, you probably make frequents trips behind it.

Last night, I spent some time watching my wife on her laptop. She was using the Facebook page she figured out how to set up herself. Which was a shock in itself, as she usually doesn't touch that kind of chore. I took a peek at her "friends"...

Every single one of them was a company. And they were completely transparent about everything. The gist of of their messages was "we want you to buy our stuff and tell your friends about us, and we'll bribe you to do it." No tricks or clever ruses. Just honest marketing.

Want to enter our contest? 'Like' us on FB.

Want to hear about special discounts and freebies? Follow us on Twitter.

Then they stick with it. Their tweets and updates are notices on special sales, often exclusive to friends or followers. Links to discount coupons. Occasional little freebies just for coming into the store.

The other thing they do is respond when someone posts to them. You know it's an employee assigned to do it, but they do it. If it's something best handled out of the public eye, they give you a way to contact an individual who can assist.

It might not be 'relationship building' as most of us look at it, but it's honest and it appears to be working for many of these companies.

Maybe we, as 'Internet Marketers', could try something similar...

    What is Twitter?

Facebook FanPages is much more effective in creating long-lasting down-to-earth and trusting relationship with your list. Because people associate Facebook to a "REAL PERSON".

And Twitter (due to spam, and frequency of updates by everyone) simply fails to establish a firm empathetic "I like you" relationship with your customers.

(NOTE: Twitter is only useful for personal reasons or if you're a celebrity/politician/activist. Not for business.)

People forget that Twitter is a social media platform, and in a social media network, people just don't come to look for solutions to their problems...

They come to network with others. What if you found someone who was trying to sell you the next big marketing tool in a dating forum? What would you do? Ignore that guy, right?

It's not so hard to understand. And Twitter, Facebook thrive on NEWS...not on Sales copies!

What you mean by IM niche here?

If you mean selling how to make money manuals well that often a niche for people who suck at innovative marketing.

Any contact with any person be it in toilet, bus, twitter, facebook, this forum, any contact can be used to market and sell.

Some think twitter, facebook is useless, great

IM is a marketing to people via internet, you still deal with people. If you were shy to cold call, approach people on the street with leaflets, speak in front of audience, then what makes u think you can deliver your message clearly in cluttered world of internet? It takes even more creativity.

As example of offline marketing I can place small leaflets on top of toilets in the stadium before big game. When people pee they prefer to look straight forward and hence are most likely to read whatever is in front of them and so on

I set my blog to post to Twitter every time I post an update. I think that's still a good practice.

I remember back in late 2006 I was listening to "SEO Rockstars" on Webmaster Radio and the hosts (Greg Boser) was saying that he came across a new startup called Twitter and they literally spent 10 minutes talking about how the idea was such an incredible waste of time/money. 3 years later, it's being used to provide updates during mass revolts in Iran. haha. Oh yeah, and just yesterday I got an email alert that said this..

Deals of the Day: Is Twitter Worth $10 Billion? Google, Facebook Think So - Deal Journal - WSJ

Like others have said, it's great for celebrities and activists. Personally, I like following sports personalities on there (famous or not) because they tend to live-tweet the events. I think that's the coolest thing is that you get to see different perspectives from a single event.

This is just my view, but it seems that if you were a marketer that followed everyone that followed you, you probably got really sick of twitter quickly. The people that have lots of followers and only follow a handful of people seem to enjoy the experience a bit more.
