Soliciting Members Via PM | What are the rules? What is your opinion?

Like the topic asks, what are the rules and your opinions on soliciting other members via personal messages?

I know it happens because I get them and I don't mind, hitting delete is a one button solution.

The reason I am asking, sometime in the next few weeks I'm going to need some beta testers. Now, creating a post asking for beta testers is only asking for that post to be deleted by the mods.

I could throw something in my signature but I really don't want anybody and everybody, I want opinions from people who I trust and respect.

So, what is your opinion on sending a PM for such things? Is it acceptable or am I asking for trouble when I start sending out Will you be my sugar daddy PM's.

If you are my friend, I welcome contact from you on any basis.

If I don't know you, why not?

If you are brand new, why are you contacting me? Or am I just one of thousands to whom you sent Prayer Messages?

I don't know what the rules are, but I follow my own gut instinct on this.

OooooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoooOOoo! I get all tingly just thinking about finding that in my inbox. Rawr.

Okay, not your sugar daddy. Call me your sugar mama, honey.

    Kidding!

In all seriousness, I wouldn't mind being asked to test/review something. (Not that I have a rep on the forum or anything, but I'd still be willing to review something if I felt I could do so effectively.)

    JMHO. YMMV. LLAP.

*mental note: add Bill to people to solicit via PM list.

I don't think it's an issue but I wanted to double check first. I don't want to break any rules or start PMing people only to find out that the majority hates getting random PM's.

Sometimes, you've gotta do things the right way, even if the right way isn't any fun.

If their isn't an uproar of anger over the issue, I'm good to go.

As long as we don't have to watch ST:TNG and can throw in some old school Star Wars, I'm game.

I think as long as you are asking people that you know or at least stating a reason why you're asking someone you don't know, then you'll be fine. When I get PMs asking me to test something, that's what I look for. If it looks like a form letter, I usually hit delete unless it seems really spammy and then I report it.

Reviews are fine....I do get review requests here and there and I am good with it. What I don't like is a sales pitch...

Soliciting members via PM is fine so long as your wife doesn't find out about it.

Here's the current semi-official stand on that.

You can publicly ask for beta-testers in the reviews section. I asked and got the okay for that idea from the main mod in that section. It's not what the sub-topic is for, but he's willing to give it a test for the time being, since we need such a place.

I make no guarantees as to how long that will or will not be an option. If it's too badly abused, it may go away at some point. The mods there will make that call.

If you approach people you know via PM who've been friendly with you, you're not likely to have a problem. Approaching people just because they're high profile here is a bad plan.

If all else fails, drop $5 on a "Warriors wanting to hire you" thread.

Yes, don't bother approaching me for help if you are going to call me Phil like some other member did. If they haven't even got the frame of mind to change the name in the message they are copying and pasting then I don't have the time to respond.
