How Lindsay Lohan is like Internet Marketing

She seems to be setting herself up to fail a lot, hasn't she? She's been in the news a lot for her probation violations and two DUIs and now this grand theft felony case.

I've found that a lot of my clients are setting themselves up to fail. I can only build the site for them, but then they get the backlinks themselves and they're going about it with the wrong mindset. They're pleased with the site but then they say things like "I hope it ranks" or "I hope I can get it to rank".

Don't "hope" - make it rank!! You are only setting yourself up to fail if you don't think that you can for sure do something and that will be detrimental to your success no matter how good your site is. So my advice for anyone is to think like the "Little Engine That Could".....I think I can, I think I can...

Now go out there and kick some SERP butt!!

Why aren't you offering a follow-up service for that? Hello, money, you're leaving it on the table.

        Perhaps, but consider this.

        You have a paying customer.

They are likely going to fail.

They will end up blaming YOU, because the vast majority of folks won't point the finger at themselves.

You likely won't get to work for them again.

Meanwhile, you are winning over new clients, but the cycle will repeat.

It's always harder to win a new client than to re-sell a happy existing one.

        Just a thought.

        All success,

        Gary

          Oh so true!

One thing that I wish more marketers would realize is that you shouldn't look at a customer as just one sale. You have to view them as an ongoing source of income!

A customer is worth way more than just one sale. Think about how many products and services you can sell to a happy customer over a lifetime!

I have a theory that one of the main reasons IM gets such a bad wrap (aside from the obvious scams and bs artists) is that a lot of IMers don't see customers. They see sales.

Good customer relations can be the difference between a few short bursts of money and a lifetime of ongoing profits.

You can do it the other way too, it just seems like running in circles to me - you're continually churning to get new blood only to repeat it all over again...

I do have to agree with you as well - it scales so much better in my efforts to build and build vs churn.

To each their own but I enjoy getting payments from existing customers over and over.

This is very true but as if right now I'm sitting on about 45 sites that need to be built. I DO offer them suggestions about back linking and have on occasion given out the name of my ODesk guy. I really wish I could help them promote their sites but my backlog is so big just to build the sites alone.

Maybe I should offer some sort of PDF to my clients about how to get traffic. hmmm..

Well, it's great that you've got plenty of work, and I'm not trying to tell you how to run your business, it just seems that bundling that as a service would be a nice addition - one that would help them succeed and one that you could charge additional money for.

If you have an oDesk guy that you trust enough to have your clients directly contact him, why not sell the service to your clients and outsource it to him? You clearly trust him.

Just some thoughts on using leverage and helping the clients.

            Have a great day.

I used to think she did it for attention. But if she's stealing, that attention's not making her much money, so maybe she is just messed up.
