Best way of putting video on site but not YouTube

Hi Gang

YouTube and some of the other freebies video sites are fine but of course it looks much better and clearer when you have them on your own site, hosted by yourself or however..

The scary thing though is I think you have to effectively pay for each download/amount of data downloaded or have I got that wrong?

Basially, what's the best but most cost effective (cheapest ;-) way of doing this?

      You will want to make them avi's or flash videos, whichever is smaller will be better for you. Flash is the standard right now though. Your hosting will provide a set amount of bandwith for you. If you go over the allowed bandwith per month you will pay a lot more for overage. Compare hosting plans for bandwith allowance. Don't go with companies that offer unlimited bandwith for cheap prices though, they are not reliable in my experience. It does look much better than hosting on youtube, but you will have to pay the extra $$ for it. So as long as your site is profitable then you should have no problems.

    Yeah, I heard about Viddler, I will check that out thanks. Is that still hosted then by them rather than you having to pay for downloading? (So, similar to YouTube?)

    Cheers also Ahuddy - Yeah, you're right to be honest, it's just you know how it gives a better impression and perceived value if the videos are much better quality. I guess if the videos are getting tons of hits, then in theory you'd be making the extra cash to pay for it? Thanks for the tips.

    I personally just make them .flv (flash) files. Works like a charm but took me awhile to figure it out.

      Hey Phil,

      Someone mentioned using avi files and streaming those. That can annoy visitors because of browser, OS and streaming plug-in compatibility issues which is why so many use .flv

      I would recommend (as many others do) using amazon hosting services. I use a private lable of Internap, which is similar to amazon (but better with a faster delivery rate) and we streamed 890 GIGS of data last month for $140 and Amazon has a similar pricepoint per gig of streaming (below 20 cents)

      If for whatever reason are you are streaming that much data for a three minute video encoded optimized properly, that means you are getting MASSIVE traffic (I'll repeat that....MASSIVE traffic) and $120 should not be a big deal even if your page is converting at 1%

      Anyways, the point is of what you mentioned before in your second post when you mentioned views/traffic/quality, etc

      Keep us posted and good luck with your findings. Fellow warrior Josh Anderson has some great solutions for streaming video players.

      Viddler creates traffic leaks and is not favored among many professional businesses that deal with streaming media just for that reason. However, like others said, it can produce great quality video. Many will optimize their own videos to get similar results that creates a fast enough stream without the traffic leaks.

        Thanks Scott, that's really good info! I think you're right, to rank up that much traffic means you must be making more than plenty to pay for it.

        That's given me something to work with so hopefully you will see better quality stuff from me soon...for what it's woth ;-)

          You can check out this video on my site hosted on amazon:

          The steps how you make it are pretty simple:

          1) Sign up for Amazon Developer's account and get your unique key number.
          2) Get Bucket Explorer soft and enter your details for the amazon account. Then create a bucket (it's like a folder) and upload your swf. video file to it. I use Camtasia Studio to create videos so when I produce them I get:

          swf. file
          html file
          js file

          3) In Bucket Explorer change ACL for that swf file to Read for All Users
          4) When the swf. file is fully in the bucket, you will be able to get its URL
          5) Open the html you got when produced video through Notepad and replace in 3 places the simple swf. file name with the URL you got from the Bucket EXplorere

          6) Name the js file differently so that you can upload it onto your webhost and it won't interfere with the local js. files
          7) Change the initial js. file name in the html file's editing mode in the Notepad to the new one.

          8) That's it! Uplaod the new js. file to your hosting account and you can use the html as a seperate page (as you see on my site) or embed it within a page!

        Speed is something that I wondered about with Amazon. I have downloaded a few big files from there and, at first, I thought my internet connection had taken a dive. Then I realized they were throttling back because it was a constant 23-25 kbps for one hour.

        What kind of speeds do you get with Internap?

      One service I haven't seen mentioned much that works GREAT is SimpleCDN (SimpleCDN - Pure Delivery). It's a "pay for what you use" service that serves up your media files on demand (similar to Amazon S3), but at about half the price. I've recently started using them and they have been great so far - rock solid as far as I can tell.

      It's about 6 cents per GB that you use. That's a LOT of video bandwidth for a few pennies.

    You can always take a look at Vimeo and their 'plus' account. They offer HD streaming, customized video players, private videos so they can only be seen on your site, and a host of other great things. The total is around 60 bucks a year, but well worth the full array of tools you get.

    I use Amazon S3 to host some of my videos. I worried about bandwidth costs at the beginning too but I guess it depends on the traffic to expect to get for your videos.

    The way I do things is this - if it's a free video which everybody is going to see, I'll host is somewhere else. This is free but the quality is usually a little lower but seeing as its a freebie I'm not too bothered.

    If I want to make a higher quality video I use Amazon S3 to host it but I only do this for videos that are restricted in some way - such as those in a paid product.

    But what I also found was that when you look at the actual costs, they're tiny. I'm only paying about $5 a month at the moment but of course that all depends on traffic.

    In my own tests I have found Web Hosting: Dedicated & Shared Website Hosting Solutions - Aplus.net to provide outstanding value.

    For $10 a month you can get 2000gb (two terabytes) of bandwidth a month.

    I have streamed hundreds of thousands of video views in my own test with them no problem. Additionally my partner who produces videos for many companies hosted a lot of his client's videos with them and his clients loved the reliability and speed.

    Also www.softlayer.net is a great choice.

    If you are looking for budget hosting Web Hosting: Dedicated & Shared Website Hosting Solutions - Aplus.net is a great choice.

    Amazon hosting is recommended by the stomper team. Consider a free but lower quality no-cost source like youtube while you're testing or directing unquantified traffic to your video.

    Here is what everyone should know about Amazon:

    1. It is one of the most expensive hosting solutions out there.

    2. If your video goes viral you could pay thousands of dollars a month.

    3. It should only be used as a hosting solution for videos that:

    > Need the confidence of collocation so that there is no fear of it ever going down
    > Need the assurance that you will never have a bandwidth limit... but know you will pay for it!

    2000 gigabytes of bandwidth in a month from Aplus.net will cost you $10

    Using Amazon 2000 gigabytes will cost you $370

    That is 37 times as expensive.

    The video hosting site Veoh offers good quality playback. And then there is viddler, but you have already discussed that site.

    Something that you may not know, viddler does not use the nofollow tag in your profile link to your website. The more videos you post on viddler and the more tags you use for the videos, the more backlinks you get from viddler.

    On the other hand, youtube uses a nofollow in front of links.

    Its either metacafe or dailymotion, the homepage link in your profile does not use the nofollow tag. But you only get one back link and that is on your profile.

    If you decided to go with viddler, you get free video hosting and backlinks that google will pick up.

    I used these guy's for awhile, and I found them to be Fast , easy, and good quality, I used them for my websites, & ebay sales.
    I step away from the online world for awhile, and now getting back into it, and fully intend to sign up again with these guy's when I'm ready.

    They have a free trial, and samples on their site, give them a shot!

    I'm seriously looking at them for my eBay listings in the new year. So far I like what I see, but still being quite new at using videos, I really don't know how to do a proper evaluation of their services.
