If you started a site like Fiverr or Twitter today, how would you market it?

I've always wondered what sites like Fiverr, Twitter, etc.. do to get the word out. If you were to start a site like this today, what would you do to promote the site? How would you get people to start posting content. Sites like this obviously don't have content in the beginning, unless they add fictitious content themselves to make it look like an active community.

I wouldn't. Simply said you can't compete with Twitter, it's one of those "one time" sites that can't overly be copied since it's so simplistic.

As for fiverr, maybe do a kind of website with more price options, cheaper rates, and more requirements for sellers?

I find quality to be an issue on fiverr, and I know it's only $5.00 but still.

Fiverr is totally different from twitter and I could say the former is easier to promote. People who are offering services online always looking for place like fiverr where they can offer their services....
