Telemarketing-Effective or No?

I only ask because it's a really big turnoff for me. Example of a call I just received.

Me after enduring the dreaded auto dial click: "Hello?"

Them: "Norman."

Me: "What?"

Them: "Need to speak to Norman."

Me: "Well, Norman isn't here, can I take a message?"

Them: "Give me Norman's mobile number."

Me: "Um, no. Who is this?"

Them: "Click"

See, I wouldn't mind if most telemarketers had an air of social grace to the conversation, I would listen to the pitch or whatever, but when you cop an attitude you've lost me.

What say you Warriors? Does telemarketing work for an IM model?

It is very effective if One: the caller is targeted and you have a certain knowledge that he or she might be interested in the product or service you are trying to sell, Two if you are very good at selling something without selling if you know what I mean. I.e dont just burst into a sales pitch but start a "conversation" within subject and you will find it is very effective. BTW if you have loads of contacts then it would be even greater

Telemarketing wouldn't have lasted this long if it wasn't effective :-p

Just like spamming (as in its annoying but profitable)... at least until you get the law on your tail

Haha I agree with you there, it is annoying as all get out, but it must be effective because it's still being used and turning a profit for companies that use it.

Business to business telemarketing is all the rage in the offline, forum, you should check out their discussions there.

Of course, it's really a numbers game. You can make 500 calls and you get that one deal that's worth $5000 so in the end, yeah, seems like it can be all worth it.

Now, I would hate making the calls myself but that's where outsourcing comes in

  • The more than 5-year old 50 or so telemarketing corporations, companies,
businesses and home businesses here couldn't possibly be spending their
    resources for nothing...

And: Corporations, companies, businesses and home businesses that
constantly acquire their telemarketing services couldn't be possibly
spending their annual marketing funds for nothing...

Of course: There are always the most effective ways to do things for the
purpose of the provider/manufacturer and for the benefit of the
    consumer...

When I get spammy calls similar to what you mentioned, I go:

Me: Can I get your number so I can call you back? I'm in the middle of
    something right now...

Telemarketer: Unfortunately sir, we are not allowed to give our direct
    numbers...

Me: Then you know how I feel. Click.

Telemarketing is extremely effective if you are calling targeted leads. The key is to get your hands on those leads. The best way is to generate them yourself.

As per my understanding telemarketing is a waste and a material for risen Blood Pressure. It plays differently in different moods. Sometimes you are sitting in gloomy mood after a fight within your spouse and a telemarketer calls you "an exciting romatic tour package to Malaysia, Goa etc etc only at ........so much lower costs". What will be your reply to them? This way we can think of number of such calls, which at times sounds us annoying and at times sounds funny. So, in my opinion tele marketing have not much scope.

Telemarketing works if your product and services has latent demand or new concept. Through this media you can reach to your target and explain more effectively.

    Hi,
As a Telemarketer you should be more patient to your customer but not all the time.

    Thanks,

It's effective depending on how you use it. Have any of you ever seen "Boiler Room?" I telemarketed for years and did quite well for the companies I worked for. I just think it depends on not only how you use it but what the venue is you are calling for. I've heard of it working in the IM world, but then on the flip side, I've heard of people getting really annoyed with it also.

I receive these annoying calls about how my computer is infected with viruses and I should put my computer on, and they will show me... where the evil nasties hide etc.

The laughable thing is when I say:

"Sorry I use Linux on my computer. Not windows." They stay silent for a bit, then go on about how Windows gets infected etc. It was real hilarious. Shows you...they don't listen.

Madame, you possibly have not dealt with good telemarketer. And maybe you are dealing with a company that does not do a nice job of gathering targeted data. Cold calling is very good for people who can sell, listen, and offer something of value. If you are on my targeted list and I think I can benefit you, I will most likely sell you on why. And then I make sale and you benefit. If I can't find a benefit for you, I wish you well and say bye.

Meanwhile, back at the boiler room, me and my team just keep on smiling and dialing.

Telemarketing is so "old school" that there's no way it works, right??? Wrong! It is all about selling the right person. I'm not going to try and make my living by selling to the guy that makes $250,000 and has an IQ of 140. The internet and telemarketing work the same way, you are not going to be successful selling to highly intelligent people that make calculated buying decisions. Don't let your personal dislike of receiving telemarketing calls make you believe that it doesn't work.

I have just began to think about hiring some telemarketers through freelance sites. Does anyone have a good contact? Just wondering but probably won't follow through for a while
