Email opt-in w/ giveaway on sales page... positive or negative results?

I'm curious if anyone has experience using an email opt-in (enticed with a "free first chapter" giveaway) on a sales page -- particularly for an info product (ebook)?

My thoughts are conflicting on this -- you lower the barrier for acquiring customer information, which is good. You give yourself a chance to remarket to people who clearly have an interest in your product. You get people used to downloading a product from you. You get a chance to prove your expertise and the value of your product. Those are all great things.

However, you also introduce an immediate barrier to the sales process. You give people a choice instead of a clear action path. Instead of buying now, they have to download your pre-product, find time to actually read it, decide it's good enough to merit purchase, come back to your site and complete the transaction.

Anybody ever split test this? Even if not, what are your general thoughts on the concept? As a buyer, how do you think this option would influence you?
