I am based in the UK and wanted to know how i go about registering expired domains and how long i have to wait for it to expire before i can purchase it.
What services are there that would be able to do this sort of thing for me which is to find expired domains based on keywords and then show me when they expire and then be allowed to purchased them.

Thanks in advance,

Try freshdrop.com they sell expired domains. There are others but the names are in a file on my home computer.

By the way freshdrop have changed their interface so at the moment you can try it out and not pay the $9.95

    All the best

I have backordered and won many expired domains through GoDaddy's backorder system and if I recall correctly it is generally about 2 months after the expire date that they go off the grid and become available for purchase.

Domain redemption period is of 30 days. Once the redemption period is over anyone can register the expired domain.

The redemption period may very well be 30 days as HostingAden stated above, however, an expired domain does not enter the redemption period until it has been expired for about 30 or more days.

Yes, Godaddy will show the domain as not being available, that simply means it has not gone through the entire period of time registrars give to the domain owner to keep their registration active. There are several backorder services out there including GoDaddy's service which costs about $18 or $19 per backorder.

The backorder charge includes one year's registration and the remainder is used to monitor the domain and try to secure it once the redemption period expires (not domain registration) and it becomes available for capture.

I do not know if the charges are the same for co.uk domains but it would be worth checking out the various backorder services like godaddy's and snapnames to set up a backorder. If for some reason Godaddy's system is not successful in capturing the domain, the backorder remains on the system and you can use it for another domain.

The registrar goes to great lengths to try and get the owner to renew, I know as I have allowed multiple domains expire in the past 6 months that were no longer serving us any benefit.

i work for a registrar. there's about 1-1.5 weeks after the expiration to renew without penalty (grace period) and then there is mock redemption for 2 weeks (same fee, essentially pre-redemption) and another 30 days of actual redemption period. redeemption fees are in addition to normal reg costs and vary by registrar. there is then (usually) a "fire-sale " from the registrar (expired domain auction) for the remaining week before the drop-date of the domain. The drop date varies slightly but is usually 2-2.5 months after the actual expiry date. A backordered domain ( if successful) is generally avail 2-2.5 months post-expiry, on the drop date.

good site also is pool.com. easy to use. also, B/O through Godaddy are refundable if they fail, and can also be re-assigned as needed. (they used to be non-refundable. kinda a pain.)

Good strategy for placing backorder is wait until whois has shown "redemption" for a solid two weeks. usually this means the current owner either intends expiration, or is unwilling to pay extrA fee.

Good to know information! I was unaware godaddy had changed their policy about refunds, I just kept reassigning if I did not capture a particular domain.

I have had a google blog with its own domain name for two years. I intended promoting it with articles this year. It has only had 2,500 page views over the two years - 25o in the last month - but they all will have come from searches for relevant keywords. I doubt if many people have it bookmarked.

I forgot to inform google that my credit card expiry date had changed and they were unable to get the payment to renew the domain. I contacted them before the 19-day period was up and put in the new expiry date. They still couldn't take the payment. My bank seems to have made a mistake concerning the activation of the card. I did activate it last year and have used the activation code number to contact them - which means it is activated.

I have now been told that godaddy will charge me an $80 redemption fee. With the renewal cost, that comes to over $90. I can't easily afford that. I also have to follow a complicated (to me) procedure to sort it out. I'm having to pay and do all the work.

Is it worth paying it or should I just start again with a new domain name? I have registered one just in case and have set up a new blog. I have copies of all my blog posts and can easily paste them into the new blog.

But I hate the thought of anyone buying the domain and profiting from its two-year maturity - and me having to build up the maturity of the new blog.

I've also thought of trying to buy it again once it comes on the market - $12 instead of $92.

I don't know if the domain is worth the cost or the trouble. Perhaps I should just chalk it up to experience and start again.
