Ok. So I recently purchased a domain name for IM use. I planned to use the domain for all things IM. Now I'm thinking I may have made a mistake. From what I've been reading, every niche/keyword needs to have its own domain? If that's the case, what should I do with the domain I already have purchased? (projectdrake.com).

Having a keyword embedded in the domain name (or ideally an exact keyword name) is one of several places that a keyword should appear in order to improve search ranking. Keyword domains seem most useful for micro niche sites, there are plenty of brand name sites (head of google yahoo?) that are succesful without keywords.

Your domain looks like a vanity site, useful for an IM related blog, or perhaps a marketing business site you would use to show CPA networks your professionalism.

Yes the keyword in the domain name is the best way to go, but you can still rank high if you provide lots of content and backlinks, it is better to have the backlinks on as many related sites and using the anchor text of your keyword. Also sub pages can rank high as well so optimise these pages with your keywords in the title and content.

Thanks. Good to know I didn't totally blow it with the domain lol. Now if I can just make sense of niche/keyword research I'll be headed in the right direction I think.

You may find sub-domains and file names good for some marketing efforts.
        ex: weightloss.projectdrake.com or projectdrake.com/weightloss/

Just look at search results and you'll see them right up there with keyword-name domains.

It all depends on your use of the names, and the content of the pages. Subdomains and file names may not be best if you expect viewers to type them in, but they are great for hot-linking.

you can still rank a domain without your keyword on it, its possible but a bit more difficult.
