I've been selling logos recently on Fiverr but then came across a site called MycroBurst where designers earn money by entering design competitions.

I just wondered if anyone here has used that and is it a good way to earn money from logo creation or are there better ways available? Any suggestions would be great.

Also what software would you reccommend for designing logos?

Personally I don't like those types of websites. If you value your time and services then sitting there entering designs for competitions you probably will not win is not a good way to spend your time and resources.

If you have a good service to offer, why not try and get some clients on this very forum. The fact of the matter is there are a lot of people who can design logos and will do it for next to nothing. If you want to stand out and stamp your own ground then try and be a little creative and think of other ways you could attract new customers to your business.

I agree with Will, joining competitions where you have thousands of competitors will be a waste of time and effort. Looking for great clients would be better.

Are you stuck in the past? Go with CS5.

I don't understand how you can sell logos for $5. You're selling yourself short. My graphic designer does logos for $150.

If you're good, hell, I'll hire you.

I agree on this... 150$ is approximately fair price for logo design... And about tool to create logos, I use adobe illustrator because most companies require vector based logos (for large prints and similiar)

Thanks for the offer, I may just take you up on that.

Thanks to everyone who suggested Photoshop CS3, it really is amazing. I'm only just getting used to it but the logos are looking much better.

Have you considered crowdsourcing through a site like CrowdSpring? Yes, the creative, in this business model, tends to assume most if not all of the risk...however, the upside potential may be worth submitting a design or two (especially if you are already considering creating logos for $5)

I'm going to disagree w/ the flow here and say that it may be a good idea. Just because I many times go to these different design competition websites, and will troll the non-winning entries for designs & artists I like. I have several people in my contacts list from doing this, and they get a steady flow of work from me. - And I know I'm not the only person that does this.

That being said, it will only work if you're a fairly good designer. Of course if you're not a good designer, not much (other than fiver) will work very well anyway.

    Good luck.

Never heard of this site before, I may just give it a go. Thanks.

I may also try this as well, I suppose a way to look at it is you're displaying your work on a site that gets a lot of visitors for free, and you may even get paid work out of it.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

There are many pros, and cons, to crowdsourcing, Rob. The person who posts a project can, theoretically, receive an unlimited amount of design concepts from well-qualified creatives. As mentioned, the creatives assume pretty much all the risk...you can spend hours working on a logo/or other design, only to find that your design wasn't chosen for the winning prize. You can still use that logo elsewhere, however, it'll probably be somewhat worthless, especially if it's so tailored to the posters requests...as it should be...very unique with regards to their company/business.

just some things to think about...

I wrote & released a program called Logoz3D a couple of years or so ago which is a nice small logo etc. creation program. It works alone or in concert with Photoshop etc.

I haven't done much with this program for over a year except to use it myself (alot!) but if there is sufficient interest I'm thinking of updating it and releasing a special WSO package with it. Search for Logoz3D in Google and you can find it on some of the download sites.

I 2nd that... PhotoShop from Adobe CS3 is great! Just takes some time getting use to, but once you tamed it, your Logos will be exactly the way you wanted them!
