Expired domains question

I saw something last night that I thought was interesting. I was looking into a site's backlinks and noticed that what the owner was doing was placing random links all throughout an article on different sites with pages that had fairly high PRs. Most of the sites were only one page total.

The links had nothing to do with the actual content of the article and it seemed to me that the person was purchasing expired domain names with high PR (without regard to relevancy to his/her main site) and inserting his own links all throughout a page on the site with a high PR. And it's working because the site is ranking for some competitive keywords.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this kind of method for gaining backlinks (if I did a decent enough job of explaining what I saw).

Yeah, well, I like the idea and I have a feeling there have to be many sites that have gained a fairly high PR for which the owners have simply let go and abandoned.

Maybe some of the backlinks from such sites won't be contextually relevant, but I don't know if I care. How many high PR blogs can I find to place a comment regarding my niche on the topic of effectively clearing the lint out of a hefty person's navel? It was hard enough finding a product that converts.
