www or not?

Hi guys, its been great looking around this forum the past couple of weeks. Thanks for making me welcome, i feel at home here and the advice is second to none.

Because of this forum i have been able to develop tactics to get more opt-ins and i really feel that im on the right track.

A quick question, I am still new and my website appears without www but i can access it with or without the www Does it make any differance in terms of marketing my site i.e to add it in a link on an e-zine for example. Will the search engines better pick it up one way or the other.

    Some sites don't need it. But in your case that wouldn't matter at all.

    I prefer not to use it. It looks shorter and simply cleaner. Why over complicate things when it is not needed?

    darkwiz, that's nonsense...

    OP: You can use any of the versions - the most important thing is to pick one and ALWAYS use that. Stick to it. Go to Google Webmaster Tools and let G. know which one is your preferred version. Never ever link to your site using the "non-preferred" URL. If you use both, the search engines will consider them two different sites!

    You can also use a htaccess file to redirect from the non-preferred version to the preferred one. Use a 301 (permanent) redirect.

    Searching the forum you will find plenty of instructions for how to do everything mentioned above.

    FYI: the www is kind of obsolete, so you don't really need it...

      Yeah, I totally agree, you have to pick one or the other and stick with it. I don't know if anyone has tested CTRs from articles and posts etc. But personally I prefer to go without the www because I think it makes it look cleaner.

    You can set your URL either way (www or non-www) and set your preferred URL in Google webmasters. I also redirect the URL that I don't use to the desired URL structure.

    I prefer to still use the www - mainly as people are used to it.

    But I do modift the .htaccess file in the root directory to make everything go to www

    I believe this can avoid some duplicated of urls on your site.

    personally, all the wordpress sites I create using fantastico lack the www in the link. I also wondered how is better but then I just didn't mind it anymore. So yeah just pick one and stick with it.

    It is not a great matter for SEO. You can choose one of them. They have no special effect on SEO. But you should have to use only one every where. It is very important.
