Mailing list sign-up percentage?

What percentage of people do you normally see sign up for your mailing list?

I've just started with Aweber. I'm giving away an e-book, but so far have seen no sign-ups.

Sorry for the confusion. This is my first attempt at an email list.

It's close to 100% traffic from search engines (SEO). Most of my traffic is closely related to the subject of the e-book. I am currently using a lightbox which pops up after 5 seconds (only once per user).

Today is the first day it is active and it has been "viewed" 40 times. (I don't get a lot of traffic yet.)

I don't know what is a "normal" sign-up rate or if I'm even using the right method of sign-up form.

Whenever I see less than 10% of the viewers opt-in, I change something. If there's enough traffic, split-test between 2 pages. But I think it's too soon for you to do anything, with only 40 hits and less than 24 hours traffic. See the results after 10 days or 200 hits, whichever comes first.
