Go to Google and type exactly: "Australian domain registration"
    You've enough to choose from

Unless you are an Australian taxpayer you will not be able to register an Australian domain.

Why would you want a .au domain if you don't live in Australia?

You'll need an ABN (Australian Business Number) to be able to get a .au domain and I don't think non Australian residents can get one.

That's exactly right. The only way to get an ABN is to be a tax paying Australian citizen.

I'm aware that's why i put the question like that
"I'm not based there neither have business number. So is there a way to get an .au domain? Some proxy australian company or something?"

What you are asking for is illegal! If you don't live in Aus, you can't get a .au domain. It's that simple. If you want to go the illegal route, be my guest, but I want be there to hold your hand if you get caught. What goes around, comes around!

That's not exactly true, you might have a business there without actually living there.
Is that right? I bet there are foreign investor companies which owners have business and tons of domains in Australia but i bet they don't live there.
Do you want to hold their hands too when they get caught? Would that make you happy?

Hey, what about going to the moon and placing a flag there without actually living there, is that illegal also? I bet you want to see Neil Armstrong in prison too :>

Foreign investors will set up proper company in that country or do joint venture with local companies/partners. Then you can legally obtain .au domain. Just borrowing someone's tax number to set up a company here won't work, at least I don't want to take any risk if someone ask me.

If you are targeting Australian market, many big companies just use country subdomain and redirect visitors based on their IP. I'm not really sure why you need to have .au domain.

        Sometimes it's just for fun...

I knew somebody whose name was Arturo and he was really into registering a Romanian domain, like
        artu.ro :p

Actually if there were moon-people with moon-government, Neil Armstrong would have been thrown to moon-jail

Yep, like those cool .ly and .tv domains. But I won't go as far as trying to obtain them illegally with the risk of losing it one day. If the OP can legally register a company or get trade license than by all means, go ahead.

But if Neil Armstrong went to moon-court and the moon-judge found him innocent, would he....wait for it...moon-walk? Sorry, couldn't resist

are you afraid of little competition from the other side of the world? :>

What the hell has having a .au domain have anything to do with competition. If you think you are going to get more hits on your site due to have a .au, then you are sorely mistaken.

I was simply trying to help by steering you away from something that in the end could cause you more problems that its worth. It's quite simple, the business owner bust be an Australian citizen. You don't have to live here all year long, just as long as your an Aussie!

So you truly believe that you don't have foreign companies in your country?

    • Requirements for registering an Aussie domain (.com.au and the like)

    • an Australian registered company; or
    • trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory; or
    • an Australian partnership or sole trader;
    • a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or
    • an owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or
    • an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or
    • an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or
    • an Australian commercial statutory body.
I believe you can get domain names from Asia Registry | Complete Asia Pacfic ccTLD Domain Names for $40 for two years. Or at least that's what I paid. Don't pay the exhorbitant $137 I see some companies trying it on for.

I have an ABN (Australian Business Registration) but I share my time between Paris and Sydney.

    Hope that helps.
