    I don't know.

For myself, I suppose something based on my writing and/or editing skills, because that's what I started with. The answer to this question always depends on what skills you're starting with, you know?

People are typically quick to recommend whatever's produced income for them, but there's often no reason to imagine that it'll be the right answer for you.

"Wordpress" (in this context) is a "content management system", available free of charge from wordpress.org (you'll need an FTP program to upload it, that way) and/or, in the case of many hosts, including Hostgator, available within their hosting c-Panel as a one-click installation (no FTP needed - big plus!).

It's basically "blogging software", but you can also use it to make sites that don't look anything like "blogs".

It's not intrinsically connected with wordpress.com which is a place for free hosting of a very limited range of totally non-commercial blogs only and has no relevance to you at all.

Beat me to it alexa, i do think you need some FTP software though, bit difficult for someone that doesn't know much about it. You can always learn though.
