Camtasia 7.1 Problems with HD and windows 7

Hi, I am thinking about getting Camtasia 7.1. But the reviews for that version running HD with windows 7 are not good. I am working on making shorter videos, from 2-7 minutes long. I would like to be able to make longer ones when the time comes. It seems like the problem is more with longer runs in HD.

Has anyone run into this problem with Camtasia 7.1 with HD on windows 7?

I do not know if this helps, but my system is running i7, 6GB DDR 3, 7200 rpm large HDD.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Brian

I should also mention that the shorter videos are screen capture, but longer ones would be with HD Camcorder.

I do already have Corel video studio X2 now for editing.

Any good HD camcorders for web work you can suggest?

Oh, hold on... You wouldn't want to record video with an HD Camcorder and then want to put it into Camtasia, Camtasia isn't a full-blown video editor, that's not what it's made for. You'd want to use your Corel editing software.

Camtasia is great for doing screen captures. If you're shooting normal video, you want to use regular video editing software.

Camtasia was only for the the shorter screen capture videos, and maybe in the future longer screen capture for training purposes. Because of the reviews I did not want to spend that kind of money, and then find out later that it does not do some of what I needed to do. I am looking at Camstudio for screen capture now, and using my editing software.

The camcorder would be edited with Corel Video Studio, or maybe even a better editing software. Depending how far I take this. I was just wondering what is a good HD camcorder to use.

If you are looking to create hour-long documentary videos with Camtasia, then you may run into some issues.

However, I've used Camtasia many times with camcorder-recorded video with excellent results. It's not meant to be a full-blown video editing software, but it can be used that way...up to a certain point.

I've used it in this manner to create videos as long as 20 or 30 minutes.

The reason for using Camtasia like this was because I was very comfortable using the Camtasia interface and Camtasia had some options in it I wanted to use and didn't know how in the video editing software I have - specifically the "Callouts" where I could draw a circle and zoom in and out.

I'm sure my video editing software has these features, but I didn't have the time to fuss with learning it, so I used Camtasia.

The one problem was that these videos took some serious time to render. Saving a 20-minute or so video as an AVI took over an hour....maybe close to 90 minutes.

That's because Camatasia wasn't really meant for doing videos like this.

However, if it's all you have or all you are comfortable using...and you HAVE to get something done, it's not a terrible option.

I must also add that when I did these longer videos...I didn't even attempt to render them in HD. I could see how that could cause some issues.

I use Camtasia Studio 7.1 in a configuration similar to yours, and I have had no problems. What does TechSmith support say about this issue?

I can't say I do too many videos longer than 7 minutes, however, because I don't want to bore people to death. I think YouTube had it right when they used to limit videos to 5 minutes.

From what I read so far, no word from support on this issue. It seems to be related to the latest version though.

Techsmith gives you a 30-day unrestricted trial, and the couple of times I've upgraded to a newer version on the same computer, it doesn't uninstall the previous version, you can use both.

So - Install 7.1, use the 30-day trial, and find out if it works for you. It's the only way you'll really know anyway.

Camtasia's support has told me that their software was not built for high quality/definition/length video and that it is only built for smaller screen cap type presentations.

You should probably skip it or otherwise don't pay for it.
