How to post a skilled task when I'm not the expert

Greetings Warriors,
I'm starting to work with freelancers, but I am not the expert in all things. I know what results I want, but I don't necessarily know the best way to get them. How do I post a proper job description, find a qualified candidate AND check his/her work if I don't know how to do the work myself? I've wasted a bunch of time and money sorting through some folks that over-promised and under-delivered.

Tell me I'm not the only one dealing with this challenge....

Thx.

Research what you are looking to hire for.

Look at some other "postings" for the same task.

    Develop some "evaluation criteria"

When I'm up against this type of situation, I go in (to oDesk.com for example) like I am looking for a job. I review job postings by highly rated employers.

Basically, I copy-n-paste most of my new job post. I usually see something I hadn't thought about and learn a lot in the process.

      Hope this helps.

As a matter of fact, I have been trying oDesk. How do you track down 'highly rated employers'? The number of stars at the bottom of a job posting?
        Thanks.

oDesk.com --> Find Work --> Advanced --> Enter your keywords --> Employer Rating At least 4.5 Stars.

          This comes from this thread.

Let us know how it goes.

When I started to look for writers or specialists on elance, I would often look at the previous jobs of the candidate. Many of the previous jobs contain the full job description and use it to write my job description. Also, set milestones so you do not pay everything upfront.
