Is there software that can check grammar??

Hi B,

This one is quite good.
Grammarly - English grammar checker, proofreader & plagiarism scanner

I seem to remember that when I used it there was a monthly fee. It is very good for improving your grammar and pointing out faults, though.

I don't think there's any software which could substitute for a good ol' human brain and someone who knows how to write properly.

I would ask your writer to do a better job when it comes to proofreading. If that doesn't work, then you should probably look for another writer who knows what he's doing.

Whitesmoke is pretty good. They have a free online checker that handles 250 characters at a time so you can check it out.

Try getting a copy of the API recommendations and there's this dude from way back that had a pretty good idea, Strunk or Struk, I'm looking for the link, he and E.B. White wrote a pretty good book about grammar back in 1918.

Whitesmoke is definitely THE tool for grammar checking, it's better that Grammarly but more expensive. I like the fact that Grammarly will give you a little pdf report on what it found. However, Whitesmoke will suggest missing words like "a","the", "of", "for" and so on.

I still miss certain things when I read through an article, mainly because I want to do things quickly and get it over with. It's nice to have another set of eyes when it comes to grammar checking.

I recommend WhiteSmoke grammar checker. One of its features is picking up on missing or misused words.

I just used the grammar checker of MS word 2007 and it checked the whole 25 page word file easily. You just have to manually see if the changes should be conducted in your article or not.

Go and buy a couple of books on grammar, you can pick them up cheap. Even high school type books are worth it.

It's impossible for software to correct grammar because there are infinite possibilities depending on what words are used and in what context. You would need a full and complex AI system to do it correctly.

Don't rely on software - learn how to do it. If you improve the quality of your articles for your readers you'll improve their perception of your expertise.

Best way to check an article ISN'T on the computer screen - always print it out on paper and edit on paper. And then go to the computer to make the changes. (learned that tip from a professional proofreader).

I'd like to contribute my experience with such software.

I recommend to invest your money in some grammar books instead, too. Grammarly and White Smoke will come up with so many falsely detected mistakes that you will be messing up your document. Microsoft Word detects most of the stupid mistakes that you can easily overlook and that's enough in most cases.

I saw a lot of bad reviews from English teachers as well and I can only agree to them. For $ 20 a month or something about $ 100 you can get either books or get help from a professional editor.

This is what I will do, I will spend some money each month to improve my skills as a writer. I will continuously learn and invest some money in a professional editor to track my results. I want to deliver my clients and readers the best possible quality and this is only achievable through constant training.

Hi all

Thank you for the comments about WhiteSmoke software. I was looking for something like that.

I just found that this software is on sale at the moment.

I got even a better deal via online chat with customer representative. All Inclusive Pack 2011 cost me the same as General. So I guess it is always good to speak with them before any purchase. You never know.

If you are on tight budget, I suggest to try it, too.

I also had a good experience with using WhiteSmoke. I bought the lifetime license last night for lifetime upgrades to their software.

Please note that WhiteSmoke seems to have annual update to their software and might ask you to update it annually.

I paid 199 USD for their lifetime upgrade (since I was already a member).

They also have an affiliate program.

The edition that I got was the full program (includes Whitesmoke for Legal, Business, Creative writing etc).

Been using WhiteSmoke since 2007. They have really improved the usability of the program since then.

Unfortunately, poor grammar and missing words are two different things. No grammar checker would have found the missing word in your example, because from a grammar standpoint the sentence is still correct. If your writer does this often, I think I would start looking for someone else, because he obviously has a proofreading problem.
